Hey all,
Been having feeding issues with my 10/22. It will jam up and force the shell forward and bend it at a 45* and the lead has a flat spot on the end, making the shell useless. Cleaned if a few times, tore it down and cant see anything, except in the mag well there is a small circle where the mag sits. It looks to be oblong and some material missing on one side like it was spinning and wore it down a bit. Can’t find any info online so I thot I would ask the pros.
Also.......I don’t know how to add the pic.
Any info be great.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to owning a 10/22. Not only are they over priced now you will have to start replacing parts to get it to work and be accurate. Try replacing the extractor.

Yes I agree they are overpriced. Everyone says how great they are, but right now I don’t see it.

I have 3 new 10 rotary mags. Been trying a lot of different shells. CCI is the best so far but still a few issues.

How do I add a pic to show the unusual wear in the mag well?

here’s a vid that explains what could be your problem explains fixes and such mine ended up the mag didn’t sit as well when firing.

I recently bought the trimag, attaches 3 rotaries together, was using this when I noticed the wear. I wonder if the weight of the three mags loaded was too much pulling it downward?

Bought mine in the early 70's, never had any issues with it and I've put a lot of ammo thru it. No help from me obviously, easiest thing is to try some different mags.

WMD mentioned changing the extractor, it seems to kick out shells no prob, it’s loading next shell that’s giving me grief. I think the mag not snug might be in the right direction. I can’t count how many shells I’ve tossed away cause the lead was bent at a 45* in the casing. The lead seems to nose dive in the feed process and the bolt hammers the brass and bends it.

I figured with 3 loaded mag plus weight of the adapter forced it to not sit as solid and straight as it mentioned. So I took my tri mag adapt off and did the tape mod as mentioned in the vid which fixed my problem but got old with the tape so I modded mine so the plunger sat out a bit further and exerted a bit more force to push the mag forward to the chamber and have yet to have another problem since then new Extractor can help too.

What part looks oblong, the plunger for the mag release, or the hole in it's center?
You pretty much have to learn to read the remains of the damaged mis-feed to get a handle on what is the root cause of the problem. Like whether there is a cut on the top or bottom of the bullet from scraping against the chamber edges, if they are sharp rather than rounded enough to allow the bullet nose to slide. Or it's blunted by smacking squarely into the chamber end face of the barrel.
Occasionally the feed lips on the mag are in need of a touch of stone work. Shouldn't have to, but when every consumer product is trying to wring the most money out of the least manufacturing cost, it's pretty predictable.
Same with the bolt face, which can be rough enough to catch the cartridge and keep it from reliably sliding as the cartridge transitions from the mag to the bolt while chambering.

I hogged out the mag well of a stock with a coarse file to cure the PITA of mags being hard to install and remove. Mags now drop free, and the reliability was as good as it should be, which is to say, as long as I hose the thing out with a half can of WD40 and oil it up afterwards, about annually, it runs like a top. That's been well over thirty years now, with usage ranging from a couple bricks a year to several bricks a weekend gopher shooting.
And I threw away the stupid effing bolt hold open.
Make sure the mags are clean, no burrs and lubed. Same with the action. If it's a brand new gun, it's going to take a while to wear off any rough edges that might be slowing things down.

Run through the 10/22 sticky in the rimfire thread section.
Post some pictures of the damaged cartridges and the areas that you think are a problem.
Picture posting is covered at length in the Photos and videos sub-forum. Host them on a free photo site, post the link or the code to the pictures in your post.

i was getting stove pipes all the time with my new 10/22. i traced the issued to a loose magazine wobbling when the spent case hit the extractor on the mag. to solve the issue i removed the plunger and spring and stretched the spring a few thousands of an inch, my father made springs for 20years as a tool and die maker and said this is not an issue. however he did recomend tempering the spring so it wont compress from over use. a side affect of tempering he says is the spring could shrink a bit and then might not fit over the plunger again. honestly this is my first 10/22 and i cant understand the hype. i have spent hours polishing and modifying things to make the gun work like ruger should have sent it out.

also putting the main extractor on the mag seems like a bad idea. has anyone filed off the mag extractor and used the secondary one on the trigger group and had good results? im considering this as an option. that extra 1/4 inch of bolt travel might make ejecting shells more reliable

It’s not the plunger side that has the wear , it’s the round pocket to the front of the mag well.
3 Mags are newer 10round rotary.
Gun is a collectors edition, if that matters.
Really not into doing electrical tape for a fix. I’ll sift thru all the info you guys have provided and watch the videos.
I’ll order up plunger w/ strong spring and change extractor just to do it.

My marlin xt-22vr has never missed a beat ......just sayin. Lol

WMD may be on the right track, even though it sounds counterintuitive. the rim of the cartridge must force itself into position on the bolt by sliding up the boltface and forcing the extractor to the side. some issues may be a rough hole for the extractor plunger and spring, a rough boltface, or a burr or sharp and rough extractor hook. I had a really nice Volquartsen 22 ultralight semi, really accurate reliable rifle. I really miss that gun, hope the new owner takes good care of it.

looks like the bolt isn't picking the rounds up out of the mag and just slamming the new shell against the bottom of the barrel under the chamber. have you tried copper plated rounds? once upon a time i had a gun that didnt like soft point bullets

Yessir I have and do run them. I think your right, the nose gets pushed in. I can’t completely describe the situation cause I’m not familiar with my 10/22 yet. I’ll try it out in next few days and get an update. If it piles up I’ll take pics to show exactly what it’s doin.
