Hey all,
Been having feeding issues with my 10/22. It will jam up and force the shell forward and bend it at a 45* and the lead has a flat spot on the end, making the shell useless. Cleaned if a few times, tore it down and cant see anything, except in the mag well there is a small circle where the mag sits. It looks to be oblong and some material missing on one side like it was spinning and wore it down a bit. Can’t find any info online so I thot I would ask the pros.
Also.......I don’t know how to add the pic.
Any info be great.
Thanks in advance.
What part looks oblong, the plunger for the mag release, or the hole in it's center?
You pretty much have to learn to read the remains of the damaged mis-feed to get a handle on what is the root cause of the problem. Like whether there is a cut on the top or bottom of the bullet from scraping against the chamber edges, if they are sharp rather than rounded enough to allow the bullet nose to slide. Or it's blunted by smacking squarely into the chamber end face of the barrel.
Occasionally the feed lips on the mag are in need of a touch of stone work. Shouldn't have to, but when every consumer product is trying to wring the most money out of the least manufacturing cost, it's pretty predictable.
Same with the bolt face, which can be rough enough to catch the cartridge and keep it from reliably sliding as the cartridge transitions from the mag to the bolt while chambering.
I hogged out the mag well of a stock with a coarse file to cure the PITA of mags being hard to install and remove. Mags now drop free, and the reliability was as good as it should be, which is to say, as long as I hose the thing out with a half can of WD40 and oil it up afterwards, about annually, it runs like a top. That's been well over thirty years now, with usage ranging from a couple bricks a year to several bricks a weekend gopher shooting.
And I threw away the stupid effing bolt hold open.
Make sure the mags are clean, no burrs and lubed. Same with the action. If it's a brand new gun, it's going to take a while to wear off any rough edges that might be slowing things down.
Run through the 10/22 sticky in the rimfire thread section.
Post some pictures of the damaged cartridges and the areas that you think are a problem.
Picture posting is covered at length in the Photos and videos sub-forum. Host them on a free photo site, post the link or the code to the pictures in your post.
