Who is “Charles Daly” anyway? Is it some universal trade name for a particular style of shotgun?
Charles Daly was a partner in the retail store Schoverling, Daly and Gales, of New York. They competed with the likes of Abercrombie and Fitch for the well heeled New York sporting clientele.
Charles Daly, in the late 1870's got the idea that they should create a private label brand for the store to compete with the guns they already sold....like Parker, Purdey and others. One of the very first private label products I can think of. Originally the guns were made in the small workshop of Heinrich Lindner in Suhl, Prussia. Dilly, I think you have seen on Double Gun the thread detailing the restoration of one of these Charles Daly guns from Heinrich Lindner's workshop. While they may be lowly boxlocks, they were built to a standard every bit as good as the Best guns from London.
Lindner's only son died in WWI so he had no one to take over his shop. After the enforced hiatus of the war, S,D & G found new sources for their guns, including Sauer & Sohn, Heym and other high quality German makers. Over the ensuing years the Daly name has been owned by many different entities and there have been even more different makers and country of origin for the brand. Germany, Belgium, England, Italy, Spain, Japan and more.
It's sad that the name has fallen so far. Among collectors of fine vintage guns, a Lindner Charles Daly is as good as it gets.
This is what they were back in the day:
