finally got my DG rifle

so guys i happened to trade a couple of project motorcycles for a Ruger m77 in .458 win mag it came with a Bushnell banner 1.5x to 4x scope that i don't think they make anymore. unfortunately no ammo or brass but i can figure that out
 
Read up on the "Cream of Wheat" aka "COW" method of blowing out a smaller neck case to fit. I had read on this site a guy using 300 Win Mag cases, 14 grains Unique and fill case with COW - no bullet - fire it in 458 Win Mag chamber and that blows out to close enough to re-size for 458 Win Mag - has to be trimmed to correct length. I am doing the same with 7mm Rem Mag brass, but I annealed the necks and shoulder area first - not sure if that step really needed, if prepared to loose a few?? To my mind, an "inexpensive" source of 458 Win Mag brass for reduced cast loads - not sure I would use them for "full-house" 500 grain plus jacketed bullets?

as of right now nothing but cape buffalo would be nice and mater water buffalo down in Australia. i figure i can use .45-70 jacketed bullet or even hard cast for north american game i may try for a black bear next year

plan on doing the same for the time being its nice to be able to use just about any belted magnum case most of witch can be had as range pick ups
 
45-70 jacketed bullet - I tried that. You will find that the throat in a 458 Win Mag is cut much differently - there are actually quite a difference in shape between a .45 cast bullet for 45-70 versus a .45 cast bullet for a 458 Win Mag - the Win Mag very long tapered throat makes a longer nose and fully shoulder very desirable - likely will not chamber in most 45-70 unless seated a long way into the 45-70 case.

is there a cup and sore type of bullet you recommend for thinner skinned game? i see jet hunter has a .458 win mag/lott cast bullet. long tapered throat kind of like a martini Henry then maybe not that long as the martini tapers for about 14 inches
 
My 458 Win Mag loading supplies - I have Jethunter's 485 grain GC for 458 Win Mag, and a few dozen 510 grain W-W Round Nose jacketed - to go with about a dozen factory rounds with same bullet. I bought 50 x new 458 Win Mag W-W brass. No real pressing need for that rifle - more for "play" - not bothered much by elephants or Cape Buffalo here in Western Manitoba. So no experience with it on any sort of game (except big, heavy cast bullets shot at gophers!!)

The "biggest" I have carried for game is 250 grain Accubond in 9.3x62; next would be 225 grain Accubond in 338 Win Mag, although I do have several boxes of 286 grain Partitions for the 9.3 and 250 grain Partition for the 338, that I have never used "for real". "Normal" deer hunting for me is with 150 grain Partition in 7x57.
 
Partition should work on anything. I made some easy kicking loads with the 405 grain rem soft point, but don't think they are available anymore. I have some 450 grain aframes I will be testing a bit this fall. A bit pricey, but the 458 game isn't cheap.

Not really look for cheap just something that will expand in something like a black bear
 
Right on. I would give the partitions a try. I have taken black bear with a 375 and 45/70, would like to get one with a 458 Win or Lott. Seen a nice bear yesterday.
 
I use reduced loads with the Hornady 350's, both #4502 & #4503 in my M77 RSM .458... Really good bear loads. Get rid of the shytey Bushnell Banner and put on something that can handle the recoil.

My Hornady 6th edition lists 2100-2500 fps with those bullets in the 458 WM. Is that in the ballpark of what you are running? Any issues with getting the flat nosed bullet to feed?

I haven't chrono'd these loads, but there is no problem with the FN's feeding... These are very pleasant loads to shoot.
