What Scope?

I've got about $600 for a scope for my 264 win mag savage. I am usually in forested areas. What would you spend the money on?
 
I like that scope, but I want at least the ability to go to 9 power. It sounds weird, but I feel naked with anything shorter.
 
Never mind, I thought you were mentioning the scout scope 2.5x36. I'll definitely look at that scope!
 
I do not think you will see any difference, in use, between 2-7, 2.5-8 or 3-9. I used a Leupold 2-7 on my 308 Win and on my 338 Win at different times; these are several 3-9 scopes here to be mounted, and one lonely 2.5-8 that will go on a Ruger #1. Pick one and go. I am very much a Leupold fan, so chose highest series of any of those - I have bought 3 x 3-9x40 VX Freedom in 2019 - no fleas on them at all!! You will find difference, I think, as you change from brand to brand. Someone will recommend Vortex because of their warranty - I do not own any - do not care about warranty - whatever I take out has to actually function correctly - I live too far from city to make "warranty replacement" a reasonable thing to plan to do.
I have a new, bought in June this past year, Leupold VX-3i 3.5-10x40 that will be going on a Weatherby Mark V in 7mm Weatherby Mag. An awesome looking piece, that scope is - but no experience with it yet. Price was $629.99 before taxes and shipping.
 
264 win mag, I'd say at the very least a vx3i 3.5-10x40 and preferably vx3i 4.5x14x40SF ZL-CDS...a little over 600 dollars though.
 
My favorite scope bye far is a Leupold LPS 2.5 to 10x 30mm tube, not produced any longer, I picked up a nice used one for my doctor payed 600.00 keep a eye for one used.
 
Either the 2.5-8x36 or the 3.5-10x40 (it would fit your rifle better) would be excellent choices although the trend today is to over scope most rifles with monstrous optics with all sorts of features.
 
The Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36 is an excellent scope.I can confidently endorse that choice.

Personally, I do prefer the one step up: VX3 3.5-10 x 40, mostly due to slightly better
low light performance at a lower setting.

Regardless of which of these 2 Leupolds I would have mounted, I would carry them at
5 or 6x, never higher.

If the quarry is far enough away that I "might" benefit from more power, usually there is
time to crank up the power. Dave.
 
If indeed most of your hunting is in forested areas, your shots are unlikely to be very long, and ther is no point getting high magnification. The suggested 2.5-8x seems like a good choice. 2.5 is low enough for most woods hunting, and 8x is sufficient for the occasional long shot. Leupold VX-3s are excellent scopes.
 
All this Leupold love.....time to break it up. Nikon Monarch M5 3-12x42. Only downside when compared to the Leupold is an extra 6oz of weight. Look for the sales. Prophet River had me into one for less than $600, shipping and taxes included.
