grouse hunting .

Before opening season I Shaw 20 while driving to some spots looking for moose. Now I am going for grouse and I do not find a single one... Life is hard...

Story of my life. Always see the things that are out of season or that I don't have tags for, while striking out on what I'm allowed to take. As for grouse, haven't seen any yet this year but I haven't really been looking yet.

well i was out today looking for some animals .believe it or not seen 2 butterflies and lots of grasshoppers .no deer though .

Not one in Southern Ontario. Quite a bit of Turkeys, though.
Will have to crawl further and further up North, it seems. Shame, I used to enjoy hunting ruffies in Waiparous area just a short 20 minutes drive from my home in Calgary.

LOL! You are the first individual that I'm aware of who put Looky on the ignore list just because of his unique style of writing. Most of us here can decipher it well enough and rather enjoy the twist. :)

Its really not that hard. Really, if you're not smart enough to figure out what he is saying it makes me wonder if you're smart enough to operate a gun safely...

Didn't see any grouse up the Fraser Canyon this last weekend. Didn't hear any gunfire in the valley I was in either, so I'm probably not the only one who wasn't seeing anything (I was camping not hunting mind you, so I wasn't actively out looking all day or anything.)

Tons in northern Ontario in groups of 3 to 6
They don’t even move when you miss right over their head
Great year for grouse !!!
All the best to everyone

Closing up the cottage this week on Manitoulin and I've logged plenty of km's in the bush so far and have only seen 3. Unfortunately, the first one I saw I hit with my truck and the other 2 were just end trails left in the middle of a side road where a "hunter" had shot and cleaned them. Saw what I believe are the same 2 guys driving around super slow down another road and past my cottage, I can guarantee you they were looking for more grouse. Also met a family out for a "drive" in their side by side, they stopped when I was out cutting wood. When I asked if they were just out for a drive, the little boy said they were out grouse hunting and you could tell by the look on the parents face that that was the wrong thing to say. So why bother hunting where you have permission to when you can hunt on other people's property or the road.

I've been out a few times up Harrison East over the the last month, and I've scared up exactly 1 bird. Never saw him, and I was pushing pretty thick bush. I think the forest fires up there the year before last weren't kind to the populations up there. I usually at least see a few a day, but they're skittish little buggers. I saw an actual chicken on the main FSR last time was out... I was tempted to shoot it (or just catch it and wring it's neck...) but it seemed like a trap of some sort... anyways, headed up to Lillooet this weekend, we'll see how the population fared up there over the last year, which was pretty good, probably saw a good dozen birds the last weekend I was up there.

Got home from a bird hunt from brothers cabin. Managed 7, saw about a dozen. Highlight for me was a 30 second stare off with a bobcat at 20 yards before it just stood up and walked off. Only saw them on camera before, bigger than I expected.

The morning after we got our moose...went for a walk with the Pardner Pump and came across a pack of grouse. Shot the Alpha, the beta, the omega...the whole greek alphabet. I'm telling you, it looked like a math class ;)

Seriously, I did come across 8 grouses all within 50x50ft. Managed to just get 5 (the daily limit here in Québec)...the last one went and perched itself in a tree. It was all over in like 6 minutes. WOW. Never had such an intense grouse hunt lol.

I had planned on walking the trails for the entire day and drinking beer...went back to camp and had to improvise...whipped out the whiskey.

After being out a few times I can confirm that grouse numbers are pretty decent in northeastern BC. Not that I've put much of a dent in the population.. On the weekend I went for a 1 mile walk and saw 8... got 2. They were wily and I missed a couple I should have bagged. It's been cold & snowy; not sure how much longer the good hunting will last.

Mrs. Cannon & I got our limits just outside of Chapleau. I found this year it was almost all grey's (rough). This is a good thing if you don't prefer the blacks (spruce). I find hunting greys is more fun because they're so skittish and prone to attempting escape.

We hunt yearly in this area. Historically, I found that the birds were mainly out in early mornings, and more inclined to sunny & cool mornings. Also, they mainly stuck to the trails. This year, however, it was completely different. We got birds in the snow, rain, sun, winds, clouds, mornings, afternoons, evenings. Haven't seen that up in this particular location before. Also, several were right out in the roads. Didn't see any flocks, either. The most we'd see is perhaps small groups of 3.

As an aside, I have cream of grouse soup in my lunch today!

I am going out today walking the edge of my forest ( i always do the same run ) so far i have 3 ruffed grouses. There seem to be good population this year

Decent amount of ruffies where I was at last week in Northernish Alberta. Was surprised at the size of them from what I got last year.

Saw one today while out for deer but only had sabot slugs on me. Maybe next time I will bring a smooth bore barrel with foster and birdshot. Havent tested the foster slug accuracy out of my shotgun yet.
