Marlin SBL 45-70 Stainless...My first lever action rifle

I always liked modern semi auto firearms so that’s what I always bought. Today I decided to go with something different. The Marlin 1895 45-70 in stainless steel. Wow is all I can say about this firearm. I should have bought one of these a long time ago. This gun is absolutely beautiful and I love it. Not to mention the rounds are huge, I’m sure this firearm could take down just about anything in North America including my shoulder. Damn this thing has some recoil, ha.

Definitely a very nice gun, well built and lots of accessories available.

Edit: It's a shame they went so high so quick in price... I bought mine 2-3 years ago for 1000$ tax in

I am personally using the iron sights. Dropped my moose at 200y last fall with my first shot.

A lot of the folks go with the Leupold VXR firedot line... If you can, you should join the Facebook user group. Lots of useful information there !

I think I paid less than 800 bucks, all in at Dantes, when they were having a sale a few years age.

I bought it at a risk sight unseen, and was I ever impressed with the fit, finish and accuracy.

Guess I lucked out for a change.

800$ is a steal for sure, but I honestly rather pay 1000$ and shop elsewhere than Dante

Nice Marlin. Since you have a long rail, consider a red dot (heresy, yes I know) or a Scout scope. For a red dot, the minox rv1 has good bang for the buck. For Scout scopes I really like the Burris 2-7x32. I was using it on my 1895 which I sold and now on my BLR in 450 marlin.
 
I’ve been a lever fun shooter for decades...throw a Skinners peep sight on it, so you don’t mess up the lines with a scope and you’re good to 200yds. 45/70 will kill anything we have in N. America, Buffalo included. I have....11 lever guns now. .357, .44, 30-30, sold my 45/70’s since they are too expensive to shoot frequently and I never felt really comfortable with the way it shot. My Rossi .357 has been far and away my most used gun...I’ve taken 5 deer with it the last 6 years, I took a black bear that charged me. Many coyote, gopher, rabbit etc.. I have 5 of them in .357 now, latest one is a Marlin Dark series 1894 a couple months ago. It’s an awesome rifle as well

I didn’t know scopes with a longer eye relief were known as scout scopes. Thanks for that, I’ve been searching scopes made for handguns without much success. Now I found tons, I’m leaning towards a Vortex Crossfire 2 Scout 2x7x32.

I have one as well. I only have 20 rounds through it so far. I'm still learning to shoot with ghost rings. I think it's a sight more suited to both eyes open, used more like a red dot. I'm going to have to try a few things when I take it out next.
