Talley quality?

I installed a new set of Talley rings and bases on a .338 Sako... and a fairly large Leupold...

First shot on target, second, and third off target, fourth shot the scope fell off...

The front base failed... anyone seen this before?

I heard that it can happens with the light alloy Talley on magnum rifles. I don’t know if it is something that happens lots though?!?!

Nope never seen anything like that before, must be a cast flaw or some kind of impurities in the alloy.

I’ve never had an issue with Talleys.

Seems odd. Do the screws secure by pressure. Maybey they were over torqued.

Is it possible that these bases are cheap knock-offs? They certainly do not looklike a quality high-end product!

Stuffs breaks, could be worse, like a scope failure or gun failure.

I have heard of the "Lightweight" one piece ring mounts failling on heavy recoil rifles. This failure is a new one to me.

Failures can occur with any product line, so I wouldn't expect this to be a common occurrence. The real question is if Talley will stand behind their product, replace the mount, and recommend an alternate mount for the application, if they don't think the choice of that particular mount was appropriate.

My 458wm broke a rear mount. I think they were talleys but im not quite sure. The vortex optics failed 4 times mount once so i went steel weaver rings and bushnell elite and been fine since

I just had a warne Qd steel ring show huge wear on the recoil lug on a CZ 550 in 458 Lott. I sent them some pictures and I had new rings within days, no questions asked. I have seen pics of talley Qd fail on the 458 Lott as well.

Quite frankly, most scope mounts suck.

That’s a nasty break, but also highlights an inherent weakness in the Sako dovetail mount design.

I've had those on lightweight 30-06, 300 wsm, 300 wm and I';ve never had issues.

Talley will stand behind their products... I was wondering if any else has this problem. It's a steel base. It sat too far forward on the dovetail (another reason that Sako dovetail sucks) so a thin brass shim was placed under it and it was tapped tight and the two screws tightened. You can not over torque these screws. They have a very small head. The design of a tapered dovetail induces far more 'stress' on that small 'gripping edge' on recoil than tightening screws can do. Every time the rifle is fired the dovetails are tightened until they no longer move... in this case the steel cracked and opened up.

The only mounts I’ve had break off were Leupold ringmounts on a sako 75 308 win. The tapered receivers are painful. Leupold warrantied them no questions asked.
Otherwise, I have had no issues with mounting scopes on tapped receivers on hundreds of rifles.
