i read that the brass trim was more for the flibustiers; naval contracts...something to do with resistance to salty water probably very popular in the southern islands and Louisiana...also, as listed in Russel Bouchard's book, brass trim were (in New Fr) looked at as superior quality finish...'fusil fin' so they were as well present in smaler numbers as the thrust was for tradegun...iron trimed.

Dovetail cutting can be very tricky. Measuring, and the right files are the key. Always measure under the size you want and slowly file out. I make multiple cuts with a hacksaw and take the guts out by filing. The dovetail should be slightly tapered. (the lug base) I always taper from the lock side and pin from the same side. When you are just about there......drive the lug in with a punch. Takes about 15 minutes per lug. But then I've been doing it for 30 years. Very scary the first time. I make my own lugs, so I don't fear a little screw-up. Maybe try making your own lug and practice cutting a dovetail on a piece of scrap.
It's hard to explain in writing. The dovetail can also be staked after installation. This locks it in forever. Do not use any lubricant. A little bit of rust, helps to weld things together.

P.S. Controlled rust = Tennessee mountain browning. Lol !!! And you'll need a good set of needle files.

a recomendation if going eith walnut. wear a facemask while sanding. the dust from it made me caugh and wheeze so badly it wasent even funny. (other wood dust doesent)

it also turns your snot back as pitch.
 
Thanks guys for the good advices...all noted. I will get my hand on the book "Recreating the American Longrifle" as it is recommended by Tracks as a good source of instructions...I undersytand they (Tracks) do not sell their kits with specific instructions...just a life size poster/plan of the finish musket...
Dovetail is only required on one of the underlug (back one, under the flat underside of the barrel) the 2 other ones are to be welded on the rounded face of the barrel....I suspect this dovetail will take me more than 15 min!!...first time around!
 
How is customes etc. on bringing in the kit from the US? Since it is a flint lock I don't think it is a problem is it?

I have it on loan from a buddy, but I much prefer "The art of building the Pennsylvania Longrifle " way better illustrations and information.

UPS actualy ships stuff here ?. any time ive used them they have said no they wont ship any sort of gun. they even gave me a hard time shipping a paintball marker.

Yes it seems UPS deliver replicas of antique firearms, in kit form...Track of the Wolf either ship US Mail or UPS...not sure how the product is describe to the carrier but i imagine that, technically, this is not a firearm, no serial number, no flash hole etc...this i will try to arrange!! that's my challenge.

I bought a copy of Recreating the American Longrifle, after having a copy from a friend. I figured it to be worth the price.

Have not seen the Pennsy Longrifle book, so cannot say it's better or worse.

I'm a cheap SOB, and parting with the $40 for "Recreating" did not cause me to flinch. I like good books, though.

I would expect that I would be in the market for the book Nessy speaks well of, if I had a good look at it.

I had an order come in from Track the other day, took 5 working days, and arrived in good order, via Post.

any time i order from the states i use us air mail. no bloody way il use ups. the brokerage is killer.
