I don't have experience with either but I'm interested in both rounds. I live in Southern Ontario and want to use either for coyote. Plus a bonus deer hunt up north. I realize the 270 bigger more powerful round but I do like that fast short 243 round.

My concern is the 243 ok for big northern deer

If I get the 270 it will be model 70.
243 will be browning bar.

Kind of a tough choice tbh.

Both. The answer is always both.

Do you wish to keep the pelt? Why those specific platforms? Got a line on some used ones or something?

I would get the .270 because for now it will work on both coyote and deer. You can always get another rifle for coyote later on if you want.

Something in .223 or .22-250 for example.

270 is king! But hey I'm in the same boat as you here in SW Ontario. I will toss is a curve for you...look @ 6.5 creedmoor it will do both well. The 243 is a great varmint round and perfect for yotes and wolves, but Northern bucks...no way. My 2 cents

How big are these 'northern bucks' and how far are you shooting them? I've killed more deer with a .243 than I remember from 25 yards to 200 yards in Grey county. 85 grain bullets for groundhogs and coyotes and 100 grain for deer.

The 6.5 CM or 260 remington would be a good option. Between the 270 and the 243, the 270 will have the advantage for deer but the 243 will also work. If you reload the 270 with 110 grain bullets you could always download it for coyote or you could load it to the max and have an awesome flat shooting round. The 243 will be better for coyote. It all depends what you want. If it were me, I would get a 270 and a 22-250. :)

The 243 in a BAR would be a fun gun. I killed a huge old mule deer buck with my 243 at 250 yards a couple of years ago. Should be more than capable for Ontario whitetail.

Both is best. But either will do fine, just put the bullet where it belongs.

A BAR in 243 is a very nice package. If you do go for the BAR and later regret it, let me know...

Shoulder each if you can and one will speak to you in one way or another. I have an uncle who's killed multiple white tail with his 243. That's on Manitoulin Island. I don't imagine the deer further north than that will fare any different. Know the guns capability and you'll he all set.

Get a 6.5x55 Swede and call it a day.

But seriously a 270w would be the better option since you have better bullet weights for deer and a it more down range power if a longer shot is needed.

If you plan to shoot deer beyond 200 yards the 270 is the better option. Within 200 yards, it is whatever you like best.
