I'm wondering what people think would a good 10 shot group size, at say 15, 25 and 50 yards, with a standard .22 pistol (Ruger MkIII, Buckmark, etc.)

I'm talking about practical target shooting rather than firing from a Ransom Rest or something like that.

Thanks for your advice.

i would say that it would depend if your hunting of praticing for home defence i would say for hunting 2 to 2and a half at 50 and 4 inches for home defences

2-1/2" x10 shot groups @ 50 yards with a standard rimfire pistol?! I guess I'm behind the curve... I'd be [very]happy with 6"@50, 4"@25, 2"@15 :D Everyone is different I suppose... Cheers

I don't even shoot pistol at 50 yds, nor do I own one that is capable of 2" groups at 50, nor am I capable of doing it even if I did. Start at 10 yds and work out. Its more fun up close anyway. My Ruger Mk 1 can shoot fairly tight groups at 10-15 yds but I always seem to get a flyer that screws things up. Operator error, more than likely. :D

I know that with my girlfriend's Ruger 22/45, using CCI "Greentips" (some of the most primo accuracy-oriented stuff you can get) I can get like a quarter/loonie sized (1 inch) group at 10 or 12 yards if I really think about it - control my breathing, take my time and soft squeeze every shot, etc. You should probably at least double the size of your circle each time you double the distance: 25 yards - no better than 2 inches, 50 yards, if you can hold together 4 inches you're laughing... and should probably join a Wild West show! The ammo will make a difference at any range, and at 50 yards most .22LR rounds have some some drop, especially out of a 4-6 inch handgun barrel. A 6 inch group at 50 yards with a handgun - any handgun - is respectable.

Can't say anything about 15 yards as I have never tried but i do shoot 25 yards regularly Bullseye matches and have seen shhoter put all 10 shots within one inch at 50 yards within 4-5".
I am still struggling to keep everything inside the black at 25 yards which is like 6" and all this shooting is done with one hand only ;-)
Also the type of handgun & ammo also is a factor especially at 50 yard range (mostly ammo).

JimV specifically said for practical target shooting, not hunting or home defence (both of which if you are using a .22 you've got more to worry about than group size). I suspect by your (1st) post you may not have a lot of experience here.

LMAO! YOU are putting him down for not reading/commprehending the post to which he replied? Funny...You just did the exact same thing. He specifically said practicing for home defence....and hunting with a .22 (if legal) is completely reasonable.

I suspect by your (441st) post you may not have a lot of experience here (reading) ;).

Way to welcome the newbie there Mike.

I was going to escalate with an snappy comeback but after thinking it over, you're right my reply was not in keeping with our tradition of being helpful and welcoming to new members so sorry to the new guy.

Ya, I guess I was less than cordial as well  No offense intended dragon1701a :) I wish I could shoot as well as some people can. Respectfully, I suggest the OP was polling a 'good group size', whereas 2-1/2"@50yds/.22LR is exceptional by all accounts.

OP -> Results will be largely dependent on the amount of time you invest in practice.

+1 to quality of ammunition having an appreciable effect on accuracy. Cheers

<snip> for hunting 2 to 2and a half<snip>
I agree, if you are not proficient enough to achieve such results you shouldn't be hunting at those ranges. Obviously we're not talking about hunting with a handgun in Canada, but in general....
<snip> and 4 inches for home defences
A lofty goal to strive for, why not? Aim small, miss small, after all :D

Who the hell practices pistol shooting at 50 yards anyway? If you can hit the paper at that range with 9/40/45, you're already ahead of the curve.

Focus on 15/25 yards: anything less than 2/2.5 inch groups at those distances is fantastic.

Like the sights would not cover up the target @ 50 :)

Ruger 22/45 at 15 yds 2" - 2 1/2". And lets face guys shoot a incher at ten yds , your doing good.

I can usually group everything into a very small hole at 7 to 8 yrds, but at 15 , the sights (standard sights on a ruger) will not allow me to be that precise.. at 20 and beyond , my sight picture is so bad that I cannot point at the same place.. so guess what..

Sure with the right gun I can print some decent stuff at 25, but 2 at 50, some folks have a hard time doing that with a rifle :) (me sometimes)
