Which one do I keep?

Hello rimfire enthusiasts, here's a question for you - I own a Rossi Model 62 pump 22. It's a great old gun that takes down in two pieces, functions flawlessly and is exceptionally accurate out to 40 yards or so. I've also been given back a 10/22 takedown (the stainless, synthetic model) that I bought for my father in law in 2015. (He gave me his old fishing boat so I thought it was a nice gift.) He's reached the age where he doesn't go out hunting anymore and felt that I should have it back. I believe he's not shot a box of 50 cartridges through it.

I don't get out with a rimfire rifle much anymore. Both of my sons have one that suit their needs. Ultimately I only need one so I'm considering selling one of them.

To get to the question - which one do I sell?

The Rossi is excellent - all I really need. I'd sell the Ruger but it seems to me that maybe hanging on to the newer rifle is the way to go.

I'd appreciate any and all advice. (And I'm not sure I want to keep both - I need to buy a new tent.)

Ain't no way I could let a firearm with a family tie go...

Keep both, including the Ruger takedown & you'll be glad you did years from now...

Cheers
Jay

Every so often I find pictures of the guns I've sold over the years. I feel bad everytime. Unless there is an overwhelming reason for selling one, keep the two. We live in strange times, and some jackwagon is going to put a condition on the PAL about how many guns we can own. It happens in UK.

Without the family strings, I'd keep the Rossi.
10-22's izz like dem stink'oles.

I too agree, keep both'n git nudder one just to distrack yer way oh tawt.

the rossi is the most interesting of the two and is very accurate. Easy choice. However, your 10/22 is a candidate for a Magpul Hunter stock, which will make it an awesome backup/hiker gun. You always need a backup.

I was in a similar situation where I inherited rifles, and I quickly came to the conclusion that while old guns may warrant a slot in the safe because of sentimentality, they aren't as good as modern firearms at putting rounds on target. Keep both. And if you cannot, keep the gun you would actually use if someone called you to go shoot gophers or attend a mapleseed with the boys (hint: it won't be the relic).

I’m a big 10-22 fan but that being said I love manual repeaters in 22. Makes for a fun day at the range. Based on your rifles descriptions I’d have a tough time, I’d keep both. When sellers remorse kicks in which will be easier to reacquire down the road?

I don't recommend you sell one but here's an idea if you insist:
Give it a year or even two. When you take out one of them for whatever reason, mark it on your calendar.
It's a rare day that snap decisions pan out for the best.
Then you will have a record of which one you use the most.
But I still suggest you keep both friend for reasons I already stated.

That’s kinda what I’ve been doing, mentally keeping tabs on a few rifles. My howa mini 6.5 grendels days are numbered I’m thinking, the CZ seems to get the nod most often.

Probably best to keep both unless you are hard up for the cash as neither will bring a big fortune . The cal. may be the same , but they are in two different actions , so they can be useful for different applications .

^I wish I'd read (and believed) this advice years ago, I might have made a few decisions differently about a couple of family guns. However, as someone who finds himself in the same situation sometimes (sell something to buy something)...I have another idea.

First-off...remember OP-you're asking this question in a rimfire forum where most of us likely have multiple 22s, and our eyes on 2-3 others we'd like to have. Just a guess. :) I suspect everyone who read your thread starter, myself included, thought; "what's the issue with 2, 22LR rifles?" Recognizing the OP may only have a DESIRE to own/shoot one, here is another angle;

Unless selling the 10/22 would upset your father in law, I'd consider that he only fired this modern, easy-to-replace, production rifle on one occasion. If that's the case, clearly the man never loved the rifle, or loved shooting it. Or both. No comment on the choice of that gun as a gift (I love guns as gifts!) just pointing out that you maybe shouldn't feel obligated to have affection for a gun that he barely touched. I won't say "Sell" or "don't sell", but if buying/using the tent you want would make you happier than that 10/22 locked-up in your safe, I imagine your father in law would even prefer you go that route.

I justified selling one of my grandfather's rifles sort of on the same premise, and while I'm not nostalgic, he was a successful, and pragmatic man. I wondered whether he'd prefer I keep his old rifle I can't buy ammo for anyway, or, use the funds to buy something nice I'd shoot every week. He would have chose the latter, I'm sure.

I'll vote with Tred in that any grandkids will appreciate your keeping both. And you can play with them in the meantime. win-win !! And maybe get a 'really accurate' 22 to keep them company - 3rd time charmed.
