Primers

I would NOT USE Federal Primers in a M1 Garand

I have read of too many Slam fires with federal primers

Bolt action ... sure not problem

That's how I've always thought of Federal primers as well. What about the match primers? I assume they are used in Gold Medal Match ammo and that was a staple for decades in National Match shooting with M1A rifles.

I have bought tens of thousands of many different brands. My general observations:

Some have tougher cups than others, and these have ignition problems in some of my handguns. For example, my Firestar will shoot Federal all day, but Winchester gets 1 failure per 40 shots and Russian primers about 1 failure per mag.

I keep a supply of Federal primers on hand and only use it for the problem guns.

I use magnum primers or Winchester (they are hot) in any ammo loaded with a ball powder.

I use CCI BR or Federal Match for the accurate rifle ammo.

90% of my loading is with what ever I bought cheap. Right now I am using S&B, Fiochi and Ginex I paid $24 to $34/1000. I like to keep 50,000 primers on hand so I can get though a primer drought.

For hunting loads in rifle I prefer Federal. Whether true or not, I believe they are "softer" than CCI and hence will go BANG when CCIs will not.

Target? Cheapest stuff. Pistol? Cheapest stuff.

With one tuned revolver Federal are all I use as they are softer from my experience. CCI's and I can guarantee a double strike will be required at some point. And I also have had problems with blow out on Winchester LRM's but I never received any reply's to my complaints.

Fixed it for you.
Awww sounds like someone might be short on primers and is perhaps a little jealous of the foresight of others. Call it hoarding if you want, but I sure don't want to run to the store everything I need primers, only to find out they're all gone and won't be back for months. And when they are, they've gone up in price. I keep my ears open to what's happening in the states and plan accordingly knowing there will be a delay in supply reactions here. I've watched them run out of primers and pay exorbitant prices for primers and ammo. Buckle up, its coming here too.

What's your acceptable number to buy at one time? 100? 1000?

I am very "Catholic" in my primer usage. In my stash I have Federal: 210, 210M, 215, 215M, 205; CCI: 200, 250, BR-2, and BR-4, 400, 450.
Remington: 9½, 9½M, 6½, 7½; Winchester: WLR, WLRM, WSR; Plus a quantity of old CIL 8½, 8½M Even have about 300
RWS small rifle primers.
Not running out any time soon, either, lol. Dave.

I don't have hoards of reloading components, however, I tip my hat to guys who purchase a multitude of them. It not only shows that they have a passion for reloading and shooting but to be prudent to stock-up, knowing that annually there is a general shortage.

That's what i meant, if it is specialty/match grade and a certain primer I get it but for everyday shooting even just with bolts/levers 1000 doesn't stick around long.

For me its Federal straight across the line; and if it wasn't for shortages it would be the match variation. Now I sort of keep the "M"s for my long-range rifles. Winchesters get their fair share of use, and S&Bs of all things are creeping into my F-Class loads.

What's on my no-fly list is CCIs. I've had more miss-fires with those than all the rest put together. Life is too short.

How are you finding the S&B? I have used a pile in pistols. Never made the jump to LR.

I'm using S&B large and small rifle with good results, no issues at all.
They do have a very flat radius however, and reading them for flattering is a bit different than what I'm used to.

If you're going through them it's hardly hoarding. I'm not sure who buys a single tray of 100 standard grade primers.

If you are buying "a few thousand more once a month" I don't know what else you would call it? By the way I am not short on primers but I don't hoard either.
