There have been numerous bear sightings around Grand Bend, Kettle Point, Arkona etc. On F.B somebody claimed that it was part of a "bear reintroduction" program. When I pointed out that the MNR would have to be in charge of any such program he claimed this group was outside of the MNR. The signs he said that were posted all over the area proclaimed it was the work of NOSA and Green Fur Bearers. Org.

Nowhere did it actually say they were relocating bears but that they were promoting the bears reclaiming their territory. When I looked up the websites of each there was no mention of any such program. Anybody ever hear of anything like this? I think it just a couple of young males from the Bruce Peninsula.

I don't really mind if they want to release bears, as long as they do it from far enough up!

Say, eight hundred to a thousand feet?

Maybe they were released to control the gypsy moth infestation

LoL, good thing I wasn’t drinking root beer reading this thread.
I doubt that any enviro group would hold water over the MNR, but they could try.
Try as they might though it would be asking for trouble if someone was injured by an alleged released black bear .
Just my .02.

I imagine a lot of the steps necessary for such a program would be illegal for any group not working alongside or at least with the approval of the government? Trapping live bears, transporting live bears, releasing bears... I wouldn't be surprised if each of those actions would be illegal as individual events let alone in conjunction with each other.

Plus I'm sure there's other stuff relating to negligence or endangering the public that could be added. Sounds like a good way to hey yourself in a heap of trouble...

Bear reintroduction in Southern Ontario was the standard running joke in the North, when the citiots were all in favor of canceling the spring bear season. The guy is either perpetuating that joke or was taken in by it. There has not and will not be an actual reintroduction... bears are continually expanding their range into any suitable habitat void... they have their own built-in reintroduction program.

Cant speak for Ontario but in Manitoba the bear populations are steadily increasing and are being seen further and further south here, places they havent been seen in decades

Not just bears either.

No question, the range of bear species is increasing where I am and, from my reading, in many places around the country. Black bear are showing up closer to campgrounds, farms, and settled areas. If you are taking a drive to show your kids or partner black bear in the wild, a good place to start might be a place you never saw bear until five years ago, or until last year.

Bear hardly need human help to move in. A little more likely, perhaps, to move them out.

Drive? We just look out the back window. And I'm 10 minutes from the skytrain! lol

I've been to Port Moody to visit my sister...situation and habitat there is a lot different then what we're dealing with around Grand Bend. Every year there's stories and sightings of bears further and further south of their typical range in Ontario with the expanding population. Most of the time it sounds like a bear that's on its own for the first time and trying to find its' own territory. Hopefully they keep coming so I don't have to drive north to put one in the freezer!

Out here on the prairies we have more game in the farmland than ever before imo. There used to be a farmyard every couple miles and if a moose or elk strayed from the forest it was viewed as manna from heaven and quickly hung in the shed. Every back porch had a rifle in the corner for vermin, which included bears. The “Karen’s” of the world had no influence. Seems now our whole country is karen’ed.

I wonder what the survival rate for a relocated bear would be. Seems to me dropping a stray into another bears territory wouldn’t go over well.

I think it all depends on where they are relocated to, and what the bear population is like in that location. They frequently relocate bears that come too close to the city. Hell one managed to get all the way to downtown Vancouver a few months back! That bear was relocated to an undisclosed wilderness area picked by government biologists.

Priceville - Halfway between Flesherton and Durham:

Date is correct. Had pictures of him almost daily until the snow started to fly so pretty sure he denned in the area. Haven't put the camera back up yet so not sure of his current where abouts.
