Best 22lr ammo

Opinions, tall tales, long gone pricing and availability, raspberries.

Firstly not a 22 target or biathlon gun guy.

Plinking......whatever I find, at a non gag price
Target.......10x
Raspberries.......Remington Thunderbolt.....inaccurate, stinky, misfires

Plinking - CCI Mini Mags, CCI Stingers, Sellier & Bellot
Target - SK Standard or Target Rifle, Eley Match, Eley Tenet
Raspberries - agree with Remington Thunderbolt, The Winchester Super X is hit and miss

Target: Eley 10x, Eley Match

Target practice / plinking: BBM (aka RWS) Semi auto HV 40 gr LRN

I have found it to be quite accurate and very good value for the money. A brick of 500 is in the $70 range or less if you can find it on sale.

Plinking : Aguila SV Decent plinking ammo and can be found quite inexpensively from time to time. Good enough for minute of pop can.

Target under $10 per 50: SK Yellow, SK Red, SK Biathlon.
My CZ's like the SK Red the best. My Anschutz likes the SK Biathlon the best.
I have not fully tested the higher-priced match ammo. (working on a brick of Midas but results are not in yet. Too expensive though, so I can't see myself using it long term).

Worst of the worst: Federal Gold Match. I must have purchased a bad lot when the factory was having a major QC problem or something, because this was horrible. BR rifle with 45x Sightron (capable of consistent 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards with the SK ammo), instead shooting 2-3 inch groups at 50 yards, with crazy fliers. Supersonic rounds mixed with subsonic in the same box.

Longrange (target or plinking): Had a few old boxes of SK High Velocity, old OD green box. Tried BR target shooting at 200 yards with decent results. It will go through transonic before hitting at 200. Unknown if it beats the SK subsonic ammo (yellow, red, biathlon) because of alot of wind confounding results whenever I have shot at 200 yards. Unknown of the old SK HV is the same as the new SK HV with the orange box labelling, as I have not acquired it yet.

I have found the best cheap ammo is CCI Standard Velocity in 4 none match chambered 22’s. Eley Tenex and Match are better. SK Rifle Match costs more, but slightly less consistent. Match chambers will change the results though.

Plinking - CCI SV, CCI Blazer, Federal auto match
Target - SK flat nose basic, SK rifle match
Raspberries - Remington and Winchester

^saved me some typing. :) Only addition...

My Tikka shoots CCI Velocitor very well, but I only use it on reactive targets. Surprisingly good on paper, but I use it to dismantle pumpkins @ 50 yards in the fall. lol

I tell you what folks. Eley Edge just as accurate as SK Rifle Match yet it's dry lubed for cleaner handling and quicker ejection. Really nice ammo for 50 meter pistol.

^I'll try it then. I have a couple of guns that shoot SK Rifle Match very well. Don't mind handling the buttery stuff, but would prefer it wasn't like that.

NOOOOOO!!! Haven't tried this yet but recently just bought two bricks of this...was on sale. Maybe now I know why...haha...

I'm remote. Island with 1000 population, shopping district is 15,000. Three ferries to Vancouver, two to the big island.

You lucky bastard! ;)

CCI SV for all my casual plinking across the board. Always available at a relatively decent price and accurate enough in my three rifles.
I have a 'Lil Gizzy die that I use to make them Flat nose and then hunt with them to great effectiveness and same POI.

I love SK standard plus as well.

Plinking........Federal 714. Bought a few cases of this when it was really inexpensive.
Target..........RWS Pistol Match and if I can afford it Tenex Pistol.
Raspberries...Winchester Wildcat. If you want to lead up your barrel after 25 or so rounds this is the one to do it.

The Federal Blue box 550round bulk has been my favourite cheap bulk option, specially when they were $12-$15 a box.
Mini mags are a step up and at current prices for the "cheap" bulk I'd probably just pay a bit more for the mini mags if I needed ammo.
