I am looking for a calling rifle so from 10 to 200 yards. I don't want to have to load for it and I don't want a big exit hole. ( I use a 240 wby for longer range but close it detroys them) any suggestions

223 is the easy choice, but the 222 Rem and even the 22 Hornet are alternatives with decent selection of factory ammo.

if you don't want to relaod the 223 is hard to beat.......both of my 223's shoot the WW white box WalMart special ammo under an inch...this will do nicely for 'yotes out to as far as I'll shoot at a 'yote

X2 :) Although I handload, I do tend stock up on .223 WW white box 45gr HP's when I find 'em on sale and they work fine. Just don't hit bone or all bets are off ;)

.223
dont even consider the .222 unless for some reason you want to hunt around for ammo and pay twice as much for it for the same performance. nothing wrong with a .222 if you already own one or someone gives one to you, but to go out and actually buy one seems nuts to me. ballistically it is nearly identical to the .223 but you lose the massive variety of cheap and widely available ammo that is one of the biggest selling points of the .223. if you want to spend more for ammo then get something like the .22-250, that will actually give better performance for the money.

Winchester USA pointed softpoints are dirt cheap and in my experience destroy less of the pelt than the Winchester USA varmint rounds you get in the 40 round bulk packs at Wally World™. the varmint rounds really blow up groundhogs and small varmints though.

Really any 22 caliber rifle will be good for yotes at that range. I have a 22-250 and a friend of mine uses a .204 which is deadly accurate and fast as hell and is such a small caliber that it should leave a pretty small hole.

I used to have a .222 and loved it but MANBEARPIG is right, ammo sucks for this thing. .223 and 22-250 are probably the cheapest to buy ammo for if thats a consideration of yours.

x6 on the 223. Really cheap to reload too and I like to be able to watch the bullet strike in the scope. You wont do that with a 22-250 but they are a hoot to shoot too. They all work at that range. Yotes and chucks are still dead anyways.

I've been using a Marlin 25MN .22mag for 'yotes out to the 100yd range. ( I call and bait...ambush the buggers)
Not much of a hole and the pelt is prime for trade and raised the $$$ value considerably.
I was using a .223 at one time but it still ripped the hide on exiting just a little too much for my likeing ...but not near as much as the .243 which a couple of my buddies use...lmao
( They drive with dogs and want long range rifles)
For problem 'yotes , off season , I'll knock'em down with my 'ol 6.5x55 Swede Mauser but that will blow a really big hole in them using softpoint ammo.... kinda tosses them about abit too.

I used to have a 22-250 and it was sweet and cheap.....just for fun we would take gophers (w/bipod) outside of 125yrds... another good caliber that is a tac driver and is smaller is the .17cal centerfire.
