I have a budget from 1500-2000 -ish for a long precision rifle.
I have done quite a bit research within this range, and it came down to the following:
1. Sig Sauer Cross
2. Savage 110 Precision
3. Savage 110 Elite Precision (slightly over budget)
4. Tikka T3X UPR.

All of the above offers both 308 win and 65 creedmoore. I personally lean towards 308 win.
What's your opinion on the above 4, and what's your pick if you had to choose one and one only?
Thanks.

6.5 only based on the reduced recoil (+/- 25%) and if you are serious about your precision shooting, modestly improved ballistic performance of the 6.5 round at longer distances.
I can shoot a 6.5 all day long and rarely fatigue- recoil doesn't get to me. .308, there is a limit. I have rifles in both calibers and love em.

I would go Tikka every time vs Savage. I own both. I would go 6.5 every time too. If Tikka chambers a 6MM Creedmoor I would do that if you aren’t hunting with it. 308 is a precision cartridge of our father’s era. To get good you have to shoot a lot, so reloading is next.

my concern is the barrel life of 6.5, as well as the cost of the ammo.

Regardless type of caliber, which rifle do you suggest?

If barrel life is a concern to you - you might as well go "all in" get a custom action with the necessary barrel wrench and a custom barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor - once you shoot it out - remove barrel and install a another one - with the custom action/wrench you probably do not need a gunsmith if your good with tools etc. Some custom actions are based on the Remington 700 foot print so you can juice it up to your liking.

Eh, I've had a 6.5 and a .308 and there wasn't a lot to choose between them - at the ranges that I was shooting at . IMO that's the most important thing. If your honestly shooting over 600m, then go 6.5. If your stuck at <600 buy whatever you like the look of (and probably .308 will be cheaper).

I have switched up my savage M12 Palma match rifle several times, from 308, to 6mmBR, to 6.5Creedmooor, and recently to 244RemAI.
All the barrels shot well, but when I swapped the rifle with a buddy he had the shoulder for the front match sight threaded for a PTG brake, and the recoil was reduced greatly.
I now have the rifle back , and although it was a dream to shoot with a brake, I am an irons shooter so replaced it with the 6mmm barre.
Braking stuff up makes a big difference and depending on the brake, does not add a great deal of noise but does reduce recoil, which is something to consider.
I like the Savage large shank actions and there are lots of 6.5 bullets available these days for hand loading.

Another vote for Tikka, and if you don't love the T3X UPR stock, another route you could go is to get a T3X CTR paired with a KRG or MDT chassis.

Then, get into reloading whichever caliber you end up choosing :).

Barrels are replaceable for a reason. If you shoot out a barrel that means you are shooting a lot. Even a 6.5cm barrel will take around 5000 rounds or so to shoot out then you can get a better aftermarket barrel and see the groups shrink even further. What range are you looking at shooting?

Take a serious look at a Howa 1500. If you search around you will likely be able to find a chassis rifle in either calibre.

Well with in your price range and you'll have cash left over for glass.

Precision rifle is a giant rabbit hole that you get to put (pour) money into - YMMV

Back when I started (not too long ago), I was told by many around my range to learn on .308 and move to 6.5 once comfortable.
To me it still makes sense to this day, wind calls are much harder on .308.
Requires you to stay on top of things or you miss your shot.

To me it made sense, may not make sense to many…

What range are you planning on shooting?

I’m looking at 300 yards, no more than 500.
By the way, what do you guys think about the the new vortex venom, for $700 you get a 5-25 and ffp. Sounds pretty good deal to me.
I can pair the scope with tikka t3x ctr 6.5 creedmoor and totally would be less than 2500 tax in. Very tempting

Find a well stocked store and get a chance to handle each rifle you mentioned. My understanding is the tikka's are all the same barrel and action just in different stocks so i'd probably go with the ctr and plan to upgrade to a chassis later. When it comes to optics for shooting out to 500m 25 power is way more than needed. I shoot out to 600 and find 15-16 power is lots. For starting out a scope that track's reliably and consistently is more of a priority than high magnification.

It does. I shoot 22LR because I can afford to shoot it enough to learn.
