Well,

Some of you might rememeber back in April when I had to put down my old pal of 12 years Maggie, due to cancer. She is sorely missed but we had a pup named Max who is now two and is having a hayday outside in our -15 to -30 weather up here in the north.

My wife and I saw how happy two dogs are together and decided to get another this summer and we did. It is a chocoalte lab cross crossed with a mutt. So far has been a great dog. Chews very little and keeps the big fella (85 lbs) Max busy all day.

Two weeks ago the pup was let out to take a leak and did not come back. Normally I wouldn't be too concerned but it was -32 that night and well, I was worried the pups intincts wouldn't kick in and he'd freeze.

He was home the next day after work but with one paw frozen ice cube solid.
I took him to the vet and basically the vet said time will tell. Time has gone past now and the pup has to lose the paw. The bottom three inches are dead and has to be amputated. Problem is, the operation is around $800 and both my wife and I agree that it is too much.

We had a family meeting with my three boys and they all understand that we are not being mean and that we are trying to look at Blue's quality of life and be practical about the dog.

So he goes under today when I finish up at school.

The tricky part is that he got caught in a leg hold trap on the neighbours property. The neigbors young fellow is trying to trap coyotes and got my dog instead.

Legs holds are illegal on crown land but on private land anything goes so bottomline is that if my dog hads of stayed on my property, all would have stayed well.

I spoke to the dad of the young fellow and he apologized and looked at the floor when I told him we have to put him down.

I'm glad the young fellow is out in the bush learning the tricks of the trade. My dog was just iin the wrong place at the wrong time.

I told my boys we'll start looking for another pup in the spring.

Not a very good Merry Christmas, but better to do it now than put it off and have to deal with complications of not amputeeing the leg.

Thought some of you would like to know

That sucks.Hard decision to make.

One of my beagle is getting knee surgery right now.(TPLO)

$2800.It's more than I would spend but my GF is adamant as the dog is only 5 and really it's only the cost of a vacation and Christmas for 1 year.

A few years ago, we would have not have done this. Way too much money.
Luckily we are currently in a position to cover it.

Our dog had double cataract surgery, $5k, then picked up blastomycosis in the woods, $3k in ICU fees...

Talk to your vet, you may be able to work something out for payment.

When I volunteered at the pound the most well behaved and happy go lucky dog we had was 3-legged - after a car accident. In fact, check with the local pound, I know the 3-legged black lab I took care of was surrendered by the owners because they couldn't afford the surgery...

The pound picked it up then placed the dog with a new family...

puppy down

I feel for you, it's a very hard decision to take :(. We had to put one down a couple of years back, it's really tough man, we think of her often but we had no other options as she became very aggressive with kids and other pets.

Toughy there bud :(

If it was me & the dog was part of my family it wouldn't take me long to come up with $800. but then my dog is part of my family. A good dog will give you 800 bucks in love in very short time! I've seen dogs live quite happily with 3, it's not like they have to forage for food or anything!

I'm with Dinsdale, when my 6 yr old beagle got a tumor last summer I'd have given up anything to save her:( , I told my wife I'd sell the 69 Vette for $$ if I could have saved her, & meant it.

Ex wife and I have been to the vets almost once every two weeks with one of two dogs for 6 months now.

One has Cancer (in remission do to administration of Artemisinin).

And the other do to pending double knee surgery on her back legs.

Both are thriving on acupuncture treatments, while I'm still waiting to get my own GP in our area.

One vet we see is up island about 364km round trip, and the other 66km away round trip. No regrets.

Sometime you have to do what you have to do.

BTW: Yes dogs can function fine on 3 legs, and prosthetics have been made.

Well I guess I'm just one of those soft-hearted f**ks that wouldn't and hasn't blinked twice at an $800 vet bill. Spent a lot more than that on mine and don't begrudge a cent.

As noted before, lots of dogs get by just fine with three legs. It's not life threatening and your "quality of life" argument rings hollow.

So how much are you saving? The vet doesn't euthanize for free. $700 bucks? I hope it's worth it to you.

The vet doesn't euthanize for free

And people who care about thier animals don't put them throught the stress of dying in a hospital environement with it's smells, noises etc after a painful drive in a car.

You have made the right decision and balanced the needs of your family with the respect your wounded DOG deserves. You have a wife and children who might need that 800 bucks for medical, education, legal help etc.

Dogs are Dogs nothing wrong with loving them and treating them well but they are animals and you have higher priorities in your pack to consider.

No, but mumps is my buddy and I will do it for free. I will even cremate him when I am done.

You have a valid point there. But your option is what?? looking down the site of your rifle! sorry I could no more shoot my dog than my wife.

I didn't see where he mentioned what his finacial situation was?
Let me get this straight, you respect your dog so your gonna kill it

Some people prefer their dogs chained to a post:cool:
After all "Dogs are Dogs" right?
Sounds like Mumptia thinks more of his than that.

Mumptia whatever decision you've choosen I respect :)
I, like the rest, are just putting forth our point of view.
