Well,
Some of you might rememeber back in April when I had to put down my old pal of 12 years Maggie, due to cancer. She is sorely missed but we had a pup named Max who is now two and is having a hayday outside in our -15 to -30 weather up here in the north.
My wife and I saw how happy two dogs are together and decided to get another this summer and we did. It is a chocoalte lab cross crossed with a mutt. So far has been a great dog. Chews very little and keeps the big fella (85 lbs) Max busy all day.
Two weeks ago the pup was let out to take a leak and did not come back. Normally I wouldn't be too concerned but it was -32 that night and well, I was worried the pups intincts wouldn't kick in and he'd freeze.
He was home the next day after work but with one paw frozen ice cube solid.
I took him to the vet and basically the vet said time will tell. Time has gone past now and the pup has to lose the paw. The bottom three inches are dead and has to be amputated. Problem is, the operation is around $800 and both my wife and I agree that it is too much.
We had a family meeting with my three boys and they all understand that we are not being mean and that we are trying to look at Blue's quality of life and be practical about the dog.
So he goes under today when I finish up at school.
The tricky part is that he got caught in a leg hold trap on the neighbours property. The neigbors young fellow is trying to trap coyotes and got my dog instead.
Legs holds are illegal on crown land but on private land anything goes so bottomline is that if my dog hads of stayed on my property, all would have stayed well.
I spoke to the dad of the young fellow and he apologized and looked at the floor when I told him we have to put him down.
I'm glad the young fellow is out in the bush learning the tricks of the trade. My dog was just iin the wrong place at the wrong time.
I told my boys we'll start looking for another pup in the spring.
Not a very good Merry Christmas, but better to do it now than put it off and have to deal with complications of not amputeeing the leg.
Thought some of you would like to know
