Holsters Because?

because... there isn't enough space for it in my underwear? quick draw practice would be torture if from that position and there are safety concerns: who wants to be that guy who won a half Darwin award with a bullet through a nut and everybody points at saying "ironically he even failed at completely removing himself from the gene pool?"

I RO on a frequent basis for the local Speed Steel matches held by two of my clubs. This involves moving between stages. The odd person has not yet bought a holster for the gun they use or it is a gun with a red dot or other feature that makes it hard/nearly impossible to use with a typical holster. So they come to the line with the gun cased and open and prep to shoot from the case. This is often a bit more awkward and quite a lot slower.

If you don't yet take part in any of the low key hand gun competitions in your area I strongly suggest you look into them and give them a go. It's huge fun and a great social day with what I've found to be a great bunch of folks.

PPC league at my local club

PPC matches in SW Ontario

2-gun matches in SW Ontario

3-gun matches in SW Ontario

steel shooting matches in SW Ontario

any match I may attend in the USA (I have an ATF Form 6 with a pistol on it)

any place in the USA where my Concealed Carry Permit is valid (27 states according to one source)

Are you selling holsters? I may be interested. Might start Cowboy Action once I buy a lever 357/45 Colt rifle (have the shotgun and single action pistol)

So CravingGlory, does that answer your question? It looks to be a pretty thorough list of reasons to have holsters for your handguns in this country.
I would just like to say on a personal note why I enjoy being a member of this forum. It would be easy to dismiss this question and just treat it as being troll bait however the vast majority of respondents chose to treat it as a legitimate question and offered helpful info and suggestions. I continue to view this as a sign that we are a healthy and thriving community, something that I’d not always found in this day and age. Well done.

On top of everything else mentioned;

It's also the best place for your pistol while you walk down to change targets.

This reminds me of a question a co-worker asked me (many years ago) why anyone in Canada 'needs' a handgun. I started off with "I hate golf and I suck a skiing" and I moved on from there.

Me too, golf sucks and I am 59 and too beat up for other sports, not to mention some ass in Ottawa thinks I should not have guns, well piss on that, I keep shooting, a holster is the most responsible place to park a pistol that is need being fired, don t fear holsters, get training my friend, you will learn what we are talking about.

No fear of holsters here, I just didn't know if I was missing something outside of using them for comps or keeping your pistol secure at the range.

For the most part at the range I have seen people leave their pistols on their bench, not carry them around in holsters. I haven't been to many ranges but have seen discussions around what ranges allow people to use holsters on the grounds and saw mixed replies.

If I'm spending the day at the range and shooting my go to pistol and maybe a couple of rifles, I would prefer to keep the pistol at my side. TBH I'm not sure if many ranges allow you to holster your pistol while going from say a pistol range to a rifle range on premises.

What are your experiences at the ranges you go to?

I'm all for doing that. I originally wanted to jump into 3 gun. I built my rifle from stripped receivers on up so I could fully understand what I was going to be shooting, be able to make mods/repairs as needed and to better gain a healthy respect for the platform. After a bunch of training, Trudeau stepped in to ruin that one for me.

But around the same time I got hit with a health issue that makes running from station to station and shooting from most positions damn near impossible. I have been gutted having the sport taken away from me before I even got a chance to start. But I guess it's time just to adapt and get going with what I can be involved in and some forms of pistol comps may just be what the doctor ordered. This wasn't an area I focused on before, so I'm not up on all of my options, so I need to look into this avenue better and get to practicing like a madman!
