My normal Forte for firearms is surplus, but I'm looking to expand and add something semi auto and non-restricted in 5.56 to my repertoire. My first choice would be a tavor, but it's a little out of my budget at the moment.
I've done some research which has lead me to the type 97 and the wk180c both of which look like decent rifles. I'm looking for some feedback on both rifles and any information that might be useful in my search to determine what I want to buy. Details about reliability, parts availability, etc... Would be greatly appreciated.
Also if anyone has any other suggestions for similar rifles in the same price range, that information would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

If your lucky/patient you will be able to find a used x95 for around 2600ish. If that is still too much I'd take the t97 if I were you. You can find used gen 2 or gen 3 for around or under 1100ish. Issues with it is that it can be picky with certain mags, ergonomics leave things to be desired and it's not left hand user friendly. Other than that it's pretty solid and considerably more reliable than a wk180, and much much more unlikely for something to break, I'd stay away from those 180 clones.

Go with the t97 if youre concerned about reliablity. Ive had both the wk amd multiple t97. The accuracy is a tiny bit better on the wk if you upgrade the trigger but its really not that noticable. Both my wk's had multiple failures where they had to be sent away for warranty and were sold off at approx 4000 rounds bc i was sick of it. My orignal t97 gen 2 has no less then 8k rounds through it and has never had a failure other then a couple barnaul duds.

Between the WK and T97, take the T97.

The T97 is 90% of the gun the Tavor is, due to the ergonomices IMO, at 40% of the price.

A co-worker of mine has a t97 and he swears by it, I just want to make sure that's the best option for me in that price range and that I'm not missing anything. As much as I prefer to sorry a Canadian company, I also want to get the best bang for my buck...

Get a bunch of ammo and go shoot it, if you haven't already.

That's the only way to see if it works for you.

Tavor is king but it should for the price.

I had an early WK180, other changing the extractor spring it was a solid shooter.

Shot my buddies T97 and it just eats everything and is a great rifle. It shoulders nicer and is more balanced than a non bullpup rifle, but the safety is in an odd place at the rear of the stock but that is a minor issue. The money he saved over the Tavor went to glass and ammo, but as mentioned the T97 guts and construction is 100% for the military, it will run forever.

But the WK I found was slightly more accurate. Main thing is buy something soon, or you may never have the opportunity to shoot one of these.

I'm assuming your budget is sub $1,500 since you are considering the T97 and WK. If that's the case go with the MCR, which is IMO the best option of the 3.

Yeah, no.

Edit: to clarify, my MCR had intermittent double feeds, regardless of mags or ammo. My T97 is far more reliable.

My budget is in the 12-1300 range but I've got a little leeway to splurge if I want. I was looking at the MCRs the other day, buy they just seem to be suffering some early growing pains much like the wk did....

Seriously not trying to stir the pot but my WK has nearly 2000rds through her and have yet to have any issues. Shoots my handloads MOA as well.

Cheers

Personally IMO the only one to consider is the Tavor. The WK is an unreliable POS in my experience, also the lower receiver and grip position straight up sucks. I sold mine after 2 trips in for warranty work. Now with that being said, the spectre ballistics Lynx 180 lower might change the game. My Tavor has around 9,000 rounds through it with no issues. I have shot the T97 but have never owned one however, many of my friends have them and they seem to never have issues.

Some say the T97 is awkward handling, I found it no worse to shoulder than any other bullpup. The mag release is way better than the Gen1, however the Tavor is better. But as mentioned the T97 is less than half the cost of the Tavor. Go to Cabelas and try shouldering both. I prefer the balance of a bullpup over a standard configuration. But it does take time to get used to where the magazine is with a bullpup.

Love my RDB. Reliable easy to take down adjustable gas system. I just wish it had a trapdoor on top but honestly if you set the gas according to Kel-tec it seems to be just as reliable as anything else.
