Hey all!

Thought I'd start a thread about the Swedish Mauser. Any advice and/or ideas on the rifles?

A couple of questions:

What should I look for when buying a husky? From the small amount of reading I've done, you wanna make sure that the throat isn't in bad shape?

Anything else I should be aware of?

For CG series target rifles, How hard are they to find with scope mounting areas milled in?

I know their are certain ocular sights that are more valuable then others, what would be the ones to look for?

Thanks!

Mark

Swedish Mauser rifles are finely made with an excellent reputation for accuracy. They don't have the collector appeal of other MILSURPs, mostly because they weren't used in any major wars. Look for the same things as appraising other rifles; originality and condition, especially bore condition. Many parts were serial numbered to the receiver, and that enhances value.

They are still a bargain compared to more well known MILSURPs.

Tradex had a bunch in the past. Look for reference books like Crown Jewels if you’re thinking of buying more than a shooter.

I've owned 6 M1896, M1896/38, & M38's over the past 30 years. It has been my experience that the information on the stock discs can be believed, it has been multiple decades since surplus 6.5x55 has been available and at the cost of commercial ammo most rifles haven't been used a lot. I use my M1896 for pre 1912 bolt action military matches using cast lead bullets out to 300 yards. In 2015 & 2016 I came back from matches in Phoenix with a 3rd place Belt Buckle each year. My M1896 has seen at least 5,000 gas checked cast lead bullets downrange with no loss of accuracy. Cast lead bullets and IMR 4227 were made for each other.

seems to me the 38's were 99$ and the 96's were 79$ 1985 or so?...same time Israeli 308 mausers were 99$ at canadian tire

You must be younger than I am.

I picked up Swede M38s and 96 rifles for $25 each, if I ordered a ten and $20 each if I ordered 50. Those were the best ones, all excellent.

I've honestly never paid more than $35 for an FTR M91/30, other than a few Finn refurbs. Most were cheaper.

My 96 was $49.99 from SIR in Winnipeg.

I lived in an isolated community at the time and had never seen one for sale before this. I guess if I subscribed to other mail order catalogues or surplus deaers' lists I might have seen them for sale sooner.
