I'm going to buy myself a christmas gift. I've been looking around for a .204, .22-250, .223 or .243 for around 400-$600.

heres what I've found so far

1) Remington Model 700 SPS Bolt Action Rifle for $489.00 for all calibers ($439 for .204)

2) Remington Model 700 SPS Stainless- $569.00 in all cali's

3) Remington Model 700 SPS Varmint - $519.00 in all cali's

4)Remington Model 770 Bolt Action Rifle With Scope: .243 Win $349.00!!

5)Ruger M77 Hawkeye All-Weather Bolt Action Rifle: .223 Rem, .243 $599.99

6)Savage 111FCXP3 Bolt Action Rifle with Scope .243Win. $399.99!!

7)Savage 11FCNS Bolt Action Rifles with AccuTrigger and Clip: .22-.250 Rem., .243 $509.99

8)Savage 16 FCSS Bolt Action Rifles with AccuTrigger and Clip: Standard Short Action .22-250 Rem., .243

I'm looking for a gun that ISNT heavy barrel. I'll be doing a lot of walking and lighter the better.

I havnt looked to see what guns are in stock but I'm curious to know what ppl have to say about these guns. I really like the Savage Accu-trigger but I'm also a fan of the Rem 700 and all its aftermarket parts. These are all deals in my books so lets hear what you guys think I should get myself.

I just bought a rem 700 sps and am disapointed... I have a stevens 200 in 22-250 and it shoots just as well. Gun is $300 and a tasco varmint 6-24 power scope was 109. There is lots of threads on the stevens 200 on here....

I have an SPS in 22-250 that I use for coyotes. It will shoot 3 shots @ 100 yards into a group of about .75", which isn't too bad for a stock rifle with a sporter weight barrel. The only thing that I've done to the rifle is work on the trigger a little bit. I'm not crazy about the stock on it, but it's functional. Overall I like the rifle though.

Hi

I would check what is on sale this week *and* what actually is in stock. My guess is that you will cut out half of the rifles on your list when you do.

Savage's aren't anywhere near as pretty as a Remington. They seem to shoot as well as or better than the Remingtons in the price range you are looking at.

Avoid the models with a detachable magazine. It takes enough material out of the Savage plastic stock to make a significant difference.

A lot of the specifics will depend on what range you expect to be shooting at. If you realistically expect to be shooting over 250 yards, that's going to make a difference.

My stevens has all 3 holes touching at 100. My sps is a 300 RUM and it is nearly that close but not quite. I'm going to glass the action and work the trigger, refine the load a bit more and hopefully get three bullets one hole. Scott what loads are you using in your 22-250? I found the factory loads to be not so accurate...

If you want a classy european style rifle I'd go with the Ruger Hawkeye. It has a great new trigger and I love their intergrated receiver and solid steel rings that come with it. I feel it's just made better overall, especially with it's Mauser style bolt and extractor. Next in line is Remington as far as looks goes. For accuracy, Savage has the best reputation of the lot, but also in my opinion, the ugliest of the bunch.

Hi

Rings and mounts are an often overlooked part of a rifle. I believe I've seen more rifles shoot poorly from ring / mount / scope problems than I have most other things.

I first tried loading some 55 gr Hornady V-Max bullets, but found that 50 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips shot a little better. I tried 55 gr Nosler Balllistic Tips next and so far they shoot good enough for me not to want to experiment for a while. Both weights of the Nolsers that I tried shot better than the Hornady bullet out of my particular rifle. I'm using Win. 760.

I just bought myself a 22-250 in a Remington SPS Varmint. I knew I was going to be taking longer shots and making quiet a few shots at 1 time so I went with the heavy barrel. The action in the SPS Varmint is based on the same action as the 700 Police and the trigger pull is 4.5 pounds I believe.

You need to ask yourself how far are you going to be shooting. If you are calling your shots will be around 100-200 yards I would go with a .223 but if your shots are going to be farther look at a 22-250 and have a shotgun beside you when your calling incase they come in close.

The 243 is a nice round little big for coyotes IMO, good gun for wolves and small deer if you want a little versatility.

the 25-06 might be another caliber you want to look at. Flat shooting and can be fur friendly.

Yes I should of known that atleast half of the gun's i would want would be out of stock. Happens with everything i want.

I found a Weatherby Vanguard .223 that comes with a scope ( not sure what kind, looks like a bushy banner) and hard plastic case brand new for $774.

I was looking at the Stevens because I've heard its a real shooter, its just that gun is just so damn ugly and i don't wanna have to order a bunch of parts to make it look nice.

Most of my shots will be 200yards or less, 75-100 will be the norm. I do have a couple spots were 300-400 yard shots are possible and I'd like to take it groundhog hunting next summer and shoot as far as I can also.

I'm still open to other gun's too, Find me a good deal and I will think about it

Thanks to everyone that has replied so far, you guys are a big help.

Hi

For around $550 or so you can usually find a sale on a Savage package rifle with a wood stock and a scope. Normal price is maybe $620. The scope on the package rifles is nothing special. There are a lot of scopes on the market I would take over them. They do work just fine.

I would go for a wood stock Savage with the Accutrigger. If I get lucky I'll find it for just below $500. Next step would be a $150 to $200 scope from any of several outfits. Net result with rings, maybe $700.

For what you are thinking of doing, a 22-250 would be ideal. You probably will find a .223 or a .243 before you find a 22-250. I have not seen a lot of .204's running round without heavy barrels on them.

As much as I knock people for putting heavy barrels on hunting rifles, I'm going to switch sides on this one. If you find the perfect rifle at the right price, get it even with a heavy barrel.

Very nice choices to pick from, myself I love Rugers, any model, any cal.
Don't buy a 770 Rem= JUNK It's a 710 with a different number, I would rather use a sling shot than a 770 or 710, all the other choices you have listed are very good, you can't really go wrong with any of them, pick the one that feels right on your shoulder

From the little bit of yote hunting I have done and what I am going to do i have always enjoyed taking a lite rifle. Been using a 222 rem T3 with a 6x18 on it or my 243 SPS!

I have many HB varmint rifles but they are heavy to carry hold and swing!
I will take a lite 200 yards gun myself! 22-250 is a wonderful cartridge

You might want to look at a used T3 Lite. They are very nice rifles. I used to look down on them until I bought one.

Hi

Came across an interesting rifle today at the store and it got me thinking. It was a Savage 11 BTR(?) in .223 with a 20" long heavy barrel. I don't think I would buy that particular rifle, but it is an interesting concept. Short(ish) heavy barrel on what could be (but in this case was not) a light weight rifle.

Pretty sure im getting the Remington Model 700 SPS Bolt Action Rifle - .223 Rem for $ 489.99.

unless I can find a tikka t3 .223/.22-250 or Savage Model 12FVSS Rifle for less than $600.

I'm kinda sticking towards .223 because ammo is a lot cheaper then .22250

Hi

If you go with the .223 be careful of the barrel twist. The "good" bullets for long range shooting require a fairly fast twist. Some people go as fast as 1 turn in 7". The old standard barrels were as slow as 1 in 12". You can find stuff anywhere in between.
