Hi all, new to the forum

Putting together a rem700sa stainless 5r 308 precision rig. I’m tight on the budget and looking for a mrad illuminated optic. I’m leaning to the vortex(great warranty) 5x25 56 mrad strike eagle
. It’s not the cheapest unit but I seriously can’t go much more at this time. In the future I may have the ability to upgrade.

Any thoughts?

It’s all on a simple MDT XRS chassis. 20moa rail.

Thanks. DS

I think you mean the Strike Eagle.

Some will come on here and tell you that Vortex are junk, and to save your money and buy a real scope. Some will claim that Vortex are the best scope out there. Personally, I like them. For the price point they are a great value for the money, and as you mentioned, you can’t beat their warranty. Are they the “best?” Nope, but they also ain’t $5000.

Honestly there are a few scopes in the same price range, getting good reviews, including the Athlon brand. I just tend to stick with Vortex, cause I know what I’m getting, and why fix what ain’t broke. I don’t have the scope you are looking at. I have a 4-24 Gen 1 SFP, and one of the 3-18 Gen 1 SFP. Both have been fantastic scopes. I like the reticle. The illumination is great. Like I say, a lot of scope for the price.

Thanks. I don’t even think I’ve posted in the correct thread and for that I apologize.

That’s great. Very honest. I have a vortex red dot and 3x magnifier on my 556 and it seems ok.
The trijicon on my pistol is outstanding but cost more than the pistol.
There is so much data to process and without a government style money tree I have to weigh my options carefully.
Much appreciated.

sub $800, I can highly recommend the Athlon Helos BTR Gen2 family. My personal fave is the 34mm 6-24X56. Specs are impressive and operation backs that up. I am an Athlon dealer and have used pretty much the entire line up of scopes for precision and LR shooting. The Helos BTR G2, Ares ETR and Cronus are the options I recommend.

Over $1k, the Delta Javelin is a smoking good deal and you now enter some really nice ED glass. Understand the warranty but otherwise, these scopes run well.

If the budget allows for more $$, Athlon Ares ETR is a personal fave. some prefer the Cronus BTR gen2 for the Japanese origin of manf.

I currently run both Ares ETR and Helos BTR G2 6-24. I have moved to 34mm tubes and the performance they offer me.

PM or email if I can help with an optic.

Jerry

Give the Arken SH-4 Gen 2 6-24x 50mm a serious look if you are in the market for a Long-Range Precision optic. At $799 they are feature-rich with some of the best turrets on the market. First-Focal-Plane, 34mm Tube, Illuminated Center Reticle, Ranged Parallax from 25m to Infinity, Zero-Stop, etc, etc. I presently have mine mounted on a B+T APC 308 and am very pleased with the performance and features for the money. The Arken punches far above its weight by following the "direct to consumer" marketing model which cuts out distributors and dealers in favour of offering near-factory-direct pricing to the consumer. This is the same model being followed by Apex Optics out of Calgary. In the case of the Arken, it results in Excellent value for your dollar.

The SH-4 is a genuinely high-quality optic that performs well and has no problem keeping up with my needs out to 1000m. It performs just fine alongside my Leupold Mk 4, Vortex Razor HD Gen II, Vortex Razor AMG, etc. Check it out!

I have a few mid-priced scopes in the safe, including a Vortex Strike Eagle (great), Vortex Viper (very good), Vortex Crossfire II (meh), Athlon Argos HMR (very good), Athlon Talos (okay), Primary Arms SLx (very good), Bushnell Elite Tactical (very good), Bushnell Nitro (very good), Bushnell Prime (good), Bushnell Legend (meh), Hawke something-or-other (meh), Leupold VX-3i (very good).

Just a few thoughts. Vortex quality is highly dependent on the model range. Athlon has been consistently good. I've not tried Arken for anything but they are going 34mm tubes across the board it looks. Primary Arms looks promising so far, and Meopta has some nice options well under a grand.

Also, Vector Optics is a thing - some cheap options there. Have not tried Riton but reviews are decent on some models.

Wouldn't look at anything lower than a pst with vortex. Save up so you are spending your $ only once. Also look at ares etr or find something better used.
