22-250

Your looking for 1" or less 3 shot groups at 200 yards. A good rifle, good handloads, good shooter control you should be 3/4" on a varmint rifle in 22-250.
If your rifles throwing the first cold bore shot away from the rest of the group theres probably some issues with it.

Im guessing if your out in essex you probably got some decent yardage to play with. 3 moa/6" at 200 yards isnt going to cut it specially anything out past 200 yards.
Coyotes here are so used to being shot at its normally a 250+ yard shot.

If you want to try some different grain nosler ballistic tips I have some to spare. What powder are you currently using? How many grains? Oval/ crimp?

Factory rifle and store bought ammo thats a different ball park.

Well I had no luck with the 55’s today but didn’t test all of them. 55gr NBT and IMR 4895 shot bad. 4” group bad. The 50 SBK, 52 and 53 Hornady match all shot .75” to .5” groups with varget and 4064.

There are other 55gr loads to try but after I shot the .5” group I let the gun cool down then pulled out a few other tack drivers and never finished shooting all the 22-250 loads. I was enjoying my 222 and 243 too much. Those two guns are silly accurate. We were shooting a gong at 325 yards and the paint on the gong showed a 2” group with the 243…

sharp shooter - I am in similar boat - .243" 55 grain V-Max just stupid silly good in my .243 Win rifle with start load of Ramshot Hunter powder - like who would chose that? So what reason for new-to-me 22-250?? The PC-10 223 Rem does very nicely with .224" 55 grain V-Max. Old school 22-250 - I think when still named a "Varminter" - were 50 grain - hence 1:14" twist - so some 52 grain flat base Speer HP on order to get that one working, I hope. Is very tight space to squeeze in - between .223 Rem with 55 grain and .243 Win with 55 grain.

Ya I haven't even played much with the 55's yet. I do have a load with 55's worked up for a 243 BAR that shoot silly accurate. I have another 22-250 that shoots 40gr NBT's really fast and really accurate that I take hunting for coyotes so this 22-250 heavyweight I'm trying to shoot 55's with is just for fun. I'll likely just settle on some 52-53gr target bullets and have fun with it. I'd like to try the 52gr Speer bullets, they have good reviews and are cheaper than any others.

for our 1:14, 26", 250 I load the speer 52gr hp and am very happy with them

Something might have changed. Speer Loading Manual #14 lists two bullets - .224" 52 grain. One is "22 HP" - #1035 - is flat base - is what I have ordered to try. Other one is "22 Match BTHP" - #1036. The Match bullet looks to be longer of the two, from picture in the book. Is no mention of "Varmint", in the loading manual, although that word might be on the box - have not yet received them to know.

I have some .308" Speer bullets - in the book are called "30 HP" - #1835. On the "new" Speer boxes it says "Varmint" - mostly black label with Gold lettering - I am so old most Speer boxes, to me, were yellow, with black label and yellow lettering for logo. The word "Varmint" is not used in the loading manual for these bullets, nor on the yellow box packaging. For some years, I have been ordering bullets by their Brand and their Part Number, not by name on the box - always received what I wanted, that way.

Same bullets - Speer #1835 - different era boxes - different word names:

To confirm - the Speer #1035 bullets showed up today, and do indeed have the word "Varmint" on the box - in gold letters - similar logo layout to my last post, with mostly black label and "Speer" in white letters within a gold banner. I will be trying these in my new-to-me 1:14" twist 22-250.

I am guessing my local Wally World is getting out of the ammunition business due to the deal I snagged the other night. I haven't graced the place with my presence in a good 2+ years. Wife sends me there the other night, take a browse down by the ammo case, basically empty besides some 17 HMR, 1 box of 7mm rem mag and a couple boxes of 12 gauge and to my surprise 4 boxes of .22-250 55gr Hornady Varmit Express for half price @ $24/box, you better believe I grabbed the last 4 boxes.
