Savage Axis XP for first hunting rifle

Awww did I hurt your feelings by showing how incorrect your assumption was?

I didn't realize one needs to kill deer to know how to do simple math or Google retail prices of ammo or guns... While I haven't killed a deer, I've killed multiple big game animals with a Savage Axis. Have you?

No answer until you kill that first deer.

Leave Suther alone there is finally something he didn’t learn about on the internet: the savage axis :dancingbanana:

The difference between a savage axis and a better gun is only a few cases of beer, ounces of weed, packs of smokes, dinners out or Patagonia shirts. If you can afford to go hunting you can afford an 800 dollar gun. Especially if you are an urbanite travelling to hunt

with the Axis you do not care if it gets dropped or knocked around

If you’re concerned about knocking your gun around maybe you shouldn’t go hunting. Or you can cruise around with bubba and the boys and keep your axis in good shape

Conor_90,
We are on this forum to learn from each other, to give advice to each other. In this field we are eternal learners. I have learned a ton from Eagleye, Bcsteve, Ganderite, and many others. We can disagree about what we do and how we do it and that's normal and welcome as you say. Disrespect and invective should be red lines. I have no time and availability for such attitude.

Wow such an insensitive comment on part of what I posted regarding the Savage Axis
It clearly shows your intelligent meter before this gets into a pissing match you got a spot on my ignor list

Life's too short to waste it on a fugly rifle. I agree with Conor 90, spend a little more and get something you would be proud to own. If it was me starting out again, I would keep an eye on the EE for a used rifle. You can thank me later :)

OP is no where close to buying a rifle. He is currently pondering the purchase of a cheap (err, inexpensive) Turkish single shot shotgun.

We were all knew to guns at some point, we should be happy to answer his questions and not gatekeep the sport. If I lived near him I would be happy to take him to the range so he could try a few rifles

Don’t get started on the Turk guns, they have a following just like axis…

I might grab one of these units as a fun plinker meself. Should make for an entertaining tinker project. ;)

I have one with a boyds stock and at first, it wouldn't eject spent casings. One call to savage and they sent a new spring, extractor and ball bearing from a different model. Works perfectly now. Also, the mags on these are an upgraded version from the cheap plastic tab on other axis. All in all, its a fun little carbine and well worth what I paid.

Seriously? I would have gone out to buy it that weekend, because that's when it was on SALE. Sorry that I listened to the advice of members here who echo'd I should look for something else, its no longer on sale, and therefore not a potential priority purchase for me. God forbid in my browsing of shotguns I saw some incredibly cheap ones and was curious about how they function. Worst comes to worst, I take out my grandfathers Beretta A301 that my brother just cleaned up to work flawlessly for shotgun hunting.

Not gonna lie, for a forum about guns, there are a lot of sensitive sallys here

LOL you are talking to people who have 10's of thousands invested in guns and to them an extra $500 is nothing they forget what it was like to be young and starting out and $500 is a lot of money

Frankly that $500 is far better spent on ammunition for practice then some fancy gun to impress other people

That Axis is a great starter and will teach you what you do and do not like about shooting, if you like shooting you will buy more expensive guns and scopes but thats for later

If you find the sale again buy it quit listening to the "but my guns better" crowd

That Savage will out shoot you at least till you get some practice and then you can decide to upgrade or switch calibres or like me add to the safe and try a new calibre

Thank you! Definitely a wide range of opinions on here, and to be honest, I don't really think anyone is wrong- are there better guns for a few hundred more? SURE....is the axis going to be great? NO....Will it get my feet wet with what I like and don't, and whether I want to stick with the sport of hunting and shooting? YES

I am going to keep my options open, but atleast I know now that a budget bolt gun like the axis isn't a COMPLETE waste of time and money for a noob such as myself.

Oh and buy a Savage 64 22lr its the about the cheapest 22lr semi on the market and since 22lr is cheap and easy you can blow a lot of ammo down range

Its not my thing but if clip dumps are your think then bobs tour uncle but if you actually want to practice its good for that too it should cost you under a $180.000 brand new

Why waste your money on a gun with #### resale value you intend to replace in the long run?

If you aren’t sure if you will like hunting and shooting just buy a 22 and try out target shooting and small game hunting. Much more reasonable if sunk costs is such a concern

Not hard to be a part of the “ my gun is better” crowd when you are talking about a savage axis

It wasn’t so long ago I did all my hunting with a two barrel set shotgun. I haven’t forgotten anything

500 bucks is only a few Friday pizzas, trips to the bar and date nights. It’s not 1997 anymore

I don’t know why it’s shocking that by and large self professed “ gun nuts” are suggesting different options. You wouldn’t go to a car forum and be shocked that no one thinks buying a hyundai is a good idea would you?

If you want to spend 3 days a year in a tree stand or driving around service roads in a truck the savage axis is perfect; maybe you will still be posting here after 8 years of unsuccessful deer hunts

and if you want to be an expert there is no better place then the internets

Why buy a cheap gun?

well why buy a cheap car when you are 18?

he needs to grow into the sport just like we all did, how many on this forum whos first gun was a $10 milsurp oit of a barrel in a macleods 50 years ago? From what i have seen quite alot of our senior members

A noob needs to start cheap and work their way into the hobby same as any hobby, an Axis will teach him about shooting and thats the important bit

I have owned svavges all the way back to Savage Edges and I have owned tikkas, sakos, brownings, remmingtons, thompsons, cz's, marlins, rugers, and others

the important bit is to get him started not to get him started on whatever your pet manufacturer is
