What's your thoughts on this cartridge?
Specifically for Elk and Moose and long range mule deer?

If a guy wanted to build one what action will you use?
I am thinking along the lines of a FN Mauser Please don't say Rem 700 :jerkit:
Seems like 300 win mag is all the rage around here yet I have never met anyone who shoots a 300 H&H?
Back home most guys know that if somone says he shoots a three hundred/drie honderd it's a H&H not a win mag.
How hard would it be to get Brass in Canada?

Well i dont alot of the specifics on this caliber, but what i do know is the 300weatherby is based on this cartridge, that may help lead you in the direction of what action to choose from.
 
I also like the idea of a .300 H&H Mag. It will perform at the same level as most of the other 30 cal mags such as the .308 Norma, .300 Win Mag and the .300 WSM.

I know that many M98's have been built to house the H&H cartridge but personally, I wouldn't use a Mauser 98 action. The .300 H&H has an OAL of around 3.6 inches so in order for the cartridge to fit the mag box on a 98, the mag box would have to be lengthened. Doing this would mean that metal behind the lower locking lug mortise would have to be removed in order for the cartridges to feed properly and this could be a safety hazard(real or perceived).

So which action would you sugest?
 
The .300 H&H is a fine ctg. There was a pre '64 Win 70 in it at our local shop for quite some time. Another CGN'er was the lucky one to get her. Anyway, I think the real interest in the H&H departed when the .300 Win Mag made it's debut in 1958. It does everything that the older .300 H&H can do but on a shorter [.30-06 length] action. But the ole .300 H&H has class, though.
 
Montana Rifleman has good barreled actions. Or better yet wait until the new Winchesters come out this year. Ruger is another option but it's a crap shoot with their quality as of late.

Ammo is not commonly found for a 300 H&H, nor is brass... and it doesn't do anything a 300 Win Mag won't do better... and ammo and brass is common for the 300 Win Mag and it is a noted to be a good accuracy large caliber... it can be safely done on a 98 action with no great trouble.

300 ouch and ouch was the #### when it first appeared and is great for exactly what you want to use it on.
The cartridge still has its fans today.
I used to have an O3A3 Springfield sported into 300 Holland and I believe plenty have been made on the P17 action
 
I've had my '58 vintage 721 for well over 3 decades and its still an awesome shooter. In spite of the criticism regarding Remington extractors, its never let me down and has filled my freezer many times over.
Accuracy-wise it will still hold its own against any other 300 Mag...
 
It's a fine old cartridge its all preference I now use a 300 ultra but have used a 300 win and 30-06 they will all get the job done it depends on what you like and how much recoil you can handle
 
I've got a pre-'64 Model 70 Winchester from my uncle that was originally chambered for 300 H&H. When the 300 Weatherby became the rage, he had it rechambered. He essentially devalued the gun by about 800 dollars by doing that, but it's still a fantastic rifle to shoot. It consistently prints 3/4" 5 shot groups at 100 yrds using Federal Premium Safari Grade 180 grn Nosler Partition loads. The recoil for me, is far more manageable than my buddies 300 Winchester Mag, and my Dad's 338 Win Mag. The factory trigger is set to 4.5 lbs and breaks like a glass rod. If you can find one that won't break the bank, you can't beat a Pre-'64 Model 70.
 
This one could be for sale for the right price ;). The barrel only has 55 rounds through it.

Pounder has a pre-64 M-70 in .300 H&H, and he wont part with it. I think in some ways, particularly with heavy bullets the .300 H&H is superior to the .300 Winchester. Neither do I care for the .300 Winchester's short neck. Given a choice of the two, I'd pick the H&H.
 
My longing for the .300 H&H is strictly based on its immense cool factor. It's true, the .300 Winnie may be a bit more practical....but so what? A .243 might be more practical than my .250 Savage, but it ain't a .250 Savage.
Among my friends' firearms, the only rifle I actually envy is an excellent condition Rem 721 in .300 H&H. He bought it in the late sixties, used, with a Redfield scope and two boxes of ammo for $100.00 and will never sell it.
What action? I'd go Model 700 if possible (never owned one yet!) with Win 70 second choice.
 
Yep like said there's certainly easier ways to get into the 300 club. But I see the cool factor also.. :agree:

Not that the cool factor ever killed anything. :confused: But the minute you pull one of those long honkin ouch and ouch cartridges out of your vest pocket the critters are going to fall down in awe right on the spot! I've thought about the Ruger no 1 as a good way to go for a 300 H&H :popCorn:
 
Johan, why not have a look for that link you mentioned to me way back from RSA. I never was able to find it but I remember you saying there were tons of Mausers there. You just need to find the right one, a Magnum length one! They could even house the mighty 416 Rigby. Be prepared to cash in an rrsp if you find one.

The 30 Super is very classy, much moreso than the other 30 mags. A perfect step up to compliment your 7x57.

Don't overlook Davey's gun either. It is a beauty with nary a hint of use on it.
Not to mention he has a TON of brass and dies too. Your worries would be over. Just load, point and hold on.

Check with Cary Stricker at M & S Stocking (Leader Sask). A while back he had some magnum length FN Mauser actions--not cheap, but very nice.
.300 H + H is a nice cartrige to work with. I have owned 5 or 6 over the years and presently have 2--one original pre-64 and an M-70 Classic that was made over from a 30-06. Cases and ammo can be had if you frequent access to firearms, gun shows and the EE here. I would never be without mine--and I have used the .300 win and Weatherby and a 300 wsm.
