I have a Remington 700 action (308 bolt face) McMillian stock on the way. And just can't make up my mind on a caliber. I have hunting rifles and varmint rifles so it doesn't nessasarily have to be for either one of those catagories. The barrel will likely be in a remington varmint contour mabey a little larger. Probably a lijia.

What would you build based on the following

1- Can't be a barrel burner (less than 1500 rounds) as I don't have an abundance of extra cash to rebarrel every 2 years :D

2- Has to have the .308 Bolt face

3- Don't mind wildcats as I reload but don't want anything that requires major forming.

4- Fit properly in a short action magazine box. Don't want to have to load like a single shot.

have some ideas of what I want, but was looking for some other peoples opinions just to make sure I haven't over looked anything. Doesn't have to be a varmint caliber but would get shot more if it was. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to answer. When I planned this build I never dreamed how hard this desicion would be.

6mm br

Try the 6mm br, i see on 6mmbr.com in the how tos they got the br cartridge to feed fine in the detached mag..... Very accurate, mild report, deadly on varmint.....Some guys are shooting them in the 1000yrd match...

Check out the 6mmbr site for more info.

The 6mm BR was in my final 5 I had picked looks like I might have to consider it some more. It's not a detachable box magazine I messed up typing it's a ADL blind magazine. Thinking about ordering the BDL conversion from Brownells though.

6mmBR all the way - without question.

I did the same thing a couple of years ago - I started with a Rem 700 in 243 (same difference once the barrel is off).

I built it with a 1:12 twist - as a varmint gun so 80gr bullets max. You'll need a faster twist if you want to shoot heavier (80-105gr) bullets.

Another thing to consider is chamber dimensions. If you're into turning necks and have lots of time you could go 'tight neck'. I think it's unnecessary and went with a no-neck-turn chamber (0.272"). Use Lapua brass and this dimension works well and you'll get lot's of life from your brass which makes the initial cost of 'good' brass worth it - not to mention better accuracy.

Great suggestion to check-out www.6mmBR.com

There is a wealth of great (and convincing) information there.

Good luck with your build !

6BR. I am playing with them at a mile... totally amazing!! you will NOT be disappointed. ...If you're thinking of spending dough on a good custom barrel, go with a cut rifled pipe in a .2360 land diameter, no-turn neck chambering and a 1:8 twist.

Lapua brass right out of the box with no prep at all, and any heavier match bullet and I guarantee you will be hooked

Ah I don't know if I can trust you this was your 666 post. :D Jk

Thanks for the info. one question though. Will I be able to shoot 70 and 75gr bullets with that twist. I will load some bergers for the range to play with but the majority of the time it will be shot at varmints with 75gr if I were to go with the 6mmBR.

Thanks for all the info. but no thanks for the link :D JK Now I have to spend my saturday reading. Lots of good looking info over there.

1:8 SHOULD be good from 75/80grn up to 115grn.

I was going to try some 65grn V-Max in mine just to see how they shoot.

Can you over-stabilize a bullet?

Yes you can overstablize, if it it spining too fast it can fly apart.

This happened with some 1:7 twist 7mm bbls that Llija was experimenting with.

Ha! Just Saturday? It'll take you AT LEAST the whole weekend......lol

BTW - the 600yd world record was set with the 6mmBR - just in case the hook hasn't been set yet.....

Please, let us know what you decide on.
