Fun with Cut Shells 12g

well I am impressed with the results.
Bought some 7.5 Target ammo from wallmart
Took em outa the box and cut them through about half way up.
Ran them through my Maverick 88 with a "cylinder bore"

Very accurate, was surprised.
Very POWERFULL was very surprised.
Its amazing what a cut shell 7.5 will do.

it went clean through my Black powder target. was not expecting that.
It hit the target with such forces that it tumbled in the air and flew back 20 feet !
This was at 50 Yards.

In college (70s) we called them 'pumpkin balls'. Try one on a 6" Aspen...

We did this a lot back in our teenage years,it would blow threw a chev square body tailgate both sides.My buddy had a old remi semi and on his third shot he blew his gun up lol.funny at the time ,but he could have been in bad shape.

Also know as "Newfie Slugs"; the poachers would take their shotguns with their small game licenses and go into the woods with a couple of cut shotgun shells in their boots in case they came across a moose.

I remember my dad and his buddys going out hunting in the 60's and they would always take a few cut shells with them.

I was surprised, they even "cycled", I figured they would jam up because they were cut 3/4 through.

I wouldnt try this with a chocked barrel although.

the recoil was the same as regular un cut shells.

I just seen this being done last week on youtube, guy was hitting a target at 100 yards.

I played with cut shells and then switched over to dumping the shot into a pot of molten wax and then pouring the mixture back into the shell. The result is a hard wax slug.

I shot a porcupine with one. In one side and out the other. No sign of falling apart.

Good plinking slugs for 30 cents each.

Once I got the hang of making them, they will cycle through a pump or semi.

very interesting thread...... in all these years I have never heard of a cut shell .... but I haven't fired a shotgun in 25 years

You cut an overlapping ring around the hull at the wad. The ring should have about 2-4mm of over lap. When fired, the entire top section of the hull then leaves the barrel as one solid piece, like a slug. The lower half of the hull is then ejected. Performance wise, you are turning a birdshot cartridge into a slug.

Plenty of risk. Without checking the barrel every time you can't be sure everything made it out. Wax "slugs" are one thing but outside of a dire situation cut shells are just a crappy novelty.
