Combo gun are they as great as I imagine?

I will give that combo guns achieve thier most favorable results in forested areas lots of cover. Where hunting opportunities are often at or less than 75 yards.
16 gauge or larger with a deer capable rifle barrel is a good harvester. But a third shotgun barrel could be filled with another alternative shotshell.
Or a sub caliber device.

I have used various combo guns, starting with crappy Savage models progressing to mid range quality Brno and Valmet guns, and ending up with a superb and highly useful Krieghoff drilling in 16/16/7x57r with a . 22 magnum insert. Never selling that one. You get what you pay for on combo guns. If you can afford a top quality drilling or German BBF, you wont be sorry if you live in an area that offers overlapping seasons on big game, small game, birds and Furbearers.

I agree 100 percent with ashcroft. You do tend to get what you pay for.

I had a Brno 802 in 308/12ga that I sold to a friend that was nice.
I currently have a miroku 7500 in 308/12 based on a citori action that I absolutely love. I bought it from an older gentleman in CGN and will never part with it.

I'm not sure where you're located but I would tend to go with something where the centre fire calibre is larger than 223, unless it's legal for deer where you are. Given how critical shot placement is with a 223 I still don't think I'd want one in a combo.

Combo guns "sound" like a good idea, but in fact are a deficient tool for the main job at hand. You end up compromising on your priority and lugging around largely unused steel. I have tried the concept many, many times (slow learner), but always come to that same conclusion. Pick the best tool for your priority and let the rest go, or find another way to accomplish the task.

Agree and disagree:

They're great as a utility gun around the farm or acreage, especially if you have just one gun.

For field use, I don't love them for the same reasons as hoyt above, but many guys do. OP, you really won't know what camp you're in until you try one.

I see something like a 30-30 or 7x57R over 20ga as the best and most useful combination for a fellow who is deer hunting that may want to pop a grouse along the way.

I always wanted one for day hunts walking seismic lines and overgrown roads where you are just as likely to spot a moose as a covey of grouse and will be happy with either one

Now that I no longer live where I can drive ten minutes or walk
down the hill and hunt I don’t know if they appeal as much but I still want a 8x57 JRS over 20 gauge. After seeing FAIR and rizzini guns in person I’m interested in either model if anyone has sampled them

I think the niche is actually better filled with an O/U 12 Gauge with sights, maybe even a reflex sight for one of the barrels to use slugs.

To my way of thinking, a 7x57R, 30 WCF, 8x57R with a 410 barrel would be about right for a ATV or Farm Gun.

I always thought 28 gauge and a euro rimmed intermediate caliber in a slim gun would be nice. Very few manufacturers make them in 20 gauge it seems. I guess the euro market aren’t planning to
ground swat grouse on the truck ride home

our warden in alsace was using mostly a 12 and 8x57jrs, i took very often the drilling of my dad in 16-16 and 7x65r with 1.5-6x42 but it was due to the hunt were doing morning and evening duck passing and during the day roe deer and at night wild boar control (with different scopes). those tools are great but not if you re walking too much but they can have their uses. now i found the 7x65r on the light for any drucken or drive for big boar or red deer when pushed by dogs they were on rest.

a drilling today with a 20-20 and 9,3x74r will be golden for my hunt but still on the heavy side.

Can’t think of a instance where these rifles would be useful for me. Too much compromise as others have mentioned. Shooting grouse while hunting deer? Good way to not see any deer imo.

Hunting is not 100 percent certain. Otherwise we would call it grocery shopping. I have shot deer from a stand & not 2 minutes later another one comes by to see why George is laying down.

True. But all else equal, gunshots do not attract game. Unless your in grizzly country.

I'm not so sure, I can't count the number of times I've been shooting and on leaving spot deer within 50-200 yards of where I was shooting, and then nothing the rest of the way. Or had deer wander by while field dressing.

Deer are curious.
