So I just bought a Sporter Ross.

Although I would like to get a full milsurp one it is not likely to happen so I bought what I could.

anything I should know about it. It is a 1905

Not the best but it is all the I could get.

If I have missed any pics just ask and I will see what I can do.

I will have pics up soon.

Did you buy it from Weimajack? Sounds like the bore isn't too great but the price was right. I've thought about that one...thing is barrels, wood, bands, nosecap are basically unobtanium. Still, a cheap way to own a Ross. I bought a sporter Mk III for the same reason.

Bore is dark but rifling is strong.

Jason said that it is an ok rifle. Said he likes them complete though ( non sporterized) But then again who other then bubba doesn't.

I personally think it's nice to have a sporter and a safe queen of anything. That way you can take the sporter out and really enjoy it without worrying about it at all.

Advise you slug the bore on your 1905. Early Ross 303s were made with a .298-299" bore and a .309" groove which is smaller than standard .303" dimensions.

Some Ross's, including my usa service 1905, had strange things done to the chamber. A .303 case coming out of mine looks like a .35 cal at neck, shoots fine otherwise. Chamber cast or shooting will tell. Don't count on reloading the cases!

Isn't there a proof mark or stamping that denotes the chamber having been reamed? Anyone know what it would be? I'd like to know for my Mk III as well.

Hey, if that rifle has an undersized bore...and it's dark...is there anyone in Canada that can machine it such that he now has a perfect, shiny, in spec .303 bore?

If it's a butchered ex-Military MkII***, you may well find "LC" stamped over the chamber- stamps there or not, the chamber was likely hogged out anyway. If Bubba was a previous owner, don't waste any more time and/or money on it.

Saw cases come out of a Ross MkII with Sight Ross MkIII that looked like a 35 cal as Glycerin descibed. Only the last 1mm or so of the neck was normal size and have heard of others with similar chambers. This arm is in excellent condition full military and did not have the LC mark. This did not agree with any of the chambers E, N or LC on Ross MkIIIs. Most MkI and II Rosses have very tight chambers.

Any 1905 model I have encountered has a pretty tight chamber. They are smooth (after the initial jerk) and fast and they are a heck of a pile of fun to shoot with. Some have just had SO many rounds through them, but we can always wish.......
(1) that Bubba had never found them
(2) that somebody would turn out a batch of brand-new barrels to fit
(3) that somebody would discover a warehousefull of these things and sell them to us nice and cheap....

..... you know, just all the regular wishes you wish when you see something just SO nice, that hasn't been looked after.

Have fun with your new toy!

Ok, it looks like I may need a firing pin. As it does not fire at this time.

I have tested with a primed case and nothing happens not even an impact mark on the primer.

Any help you can offer would be most welcomed.

How do I go about taking the bolt apart to clean and measure the pin?

I believe if you follow the link from Badgerdog to milsurp library you will find a posting on how to disassemble and (most importantly) reassemble a ross bolt. Personally, I'm not that brave yet.
