Whether that is with a special rifle, goin out on a open sight only, perhaps trad levergun hunting? straight wall only rule? single shot hunting? muzle loader? black powder?
ya know, that old kind of stuff.... im sorta already over the new fandagle stuff, its mostly 'maken things easy' as it gets... thermal for one..
layzor cartridges and heat seeking projectiles... wooweee

Old school... Whos hunting with a touch of old school this year?

Keen to hear

I might try and get a whitetail with my .54 cal Hawkin replica. I carried it looking for moose for a couple of weeks the last time I drew that tag but with no luck until after I swapped out to something more modern to extend my range.

Stock Ruger 77 compact in 308, Leupold 4-12, Federal 308, wool socks, winter boots, long johns, lined jeans, sweatshirt, flannel jacket, orange vest, orange touqe.
Pretty basic stuff.
Never saw the need to spend $$ money on expensive stuff to hunt.

Old school worked for dad, works for me and so far it's working for my son
Usually buy 1 new thing a year for hunting.
This year it was some 8 power small Stiener binoculars on sale 50% off at Cabela's with free shipping

I plan to take to waterfowl hunting by crossbow, which has just been legalized in Canada, finally.

Nobody has *Ever* hunted ducks, and more importantly GEESE, this way around here. I am stoked to figure out some new tactics and ways to use and adapt equipment.

Hang-on deer stands for duck hunting? Maybe.

Flu-flu arrows in a crossbow? Uh, maybe?

Not exactly firearm related though.

Finally going to be able to cross the border from Canada to hunt NY state again this fall for deer. I know that its not anything overly special or exciting but with the covid shut down keeping us away the last couple seasons its nice to get back to something I've done for 20 seasons over there!! Hopefully be able to post some pictures in nov/dec!!

Other then the mountain hunts, every other hunt is special due to its rifle. Been going through inherited rifles since ‘98, putting them to use.

We scored another shared moose hunt with the family this year. My last moose was with my long past grandmothers custom pre 64 .375 h&h. This year (our leh opens on the 20th), target is a moose with my long past grandads 9.5x57 mannlicher. I generally use Hornady 220gr with it, but loaded some 260gr partitions to try out. I’m pretty limited to 100-125 yards with its iron’s, should make for a fun season.

Cartridge on the left

My dad holds the other moose tag. He generally hunts with a custom model 54 30-06 with iron’s. This year he will be packing another of grandads builds, a custom Lee enfield 303.

The seasons already started for my newly stocked Brno 22. I spent a year and half building the stock for it, can’t help but smile every time I use it.

I'm trying something new with moose hunting this year and will be bringing up some rifles in these old cartridges: 45-70, 6.5x55 and .375H&H.

Hunted moose a few days ago at our Saskatchewan camp with my buffalo rifle, a Merkel 140 AE double barreled rifle chambered in 450-400 3" Nitro express. Wanted to get more experience with it before I go back to Africa and hunt something that actually requires such a big cartridge. Hunt went well, and I'm butchering a big, ancient ( and chewy/tough!) cow today.

well.... I took one deer already this season with the rifle I took my first mule deer with many years ago and many more inbetween. It was "borrowed" from my dad for many years before he officially gave it to me a couple years ago. The rifle is one hundred and eleven years old and still has a nice deep grooved shiny bore. She is a 1911 BSA Lee Enfield Shtle 3* in .303 with original length barrel. I had to make a custom one off scope mount rail as the original gunsmith who drilled and tapped it got the holes angling to the left.
Scope if a Bushnell Engage 2-7x32 and I switched out the military sporter wood for a nice parker hale supreme stock set.
This rifle has a ton of sentimental value to me being the rifle I used to harvest my first big game animal and on another hunt my largest mule deer, a 165 typical.
Will be my deer gun and back up rifle to my 7mm rem mag when i go moose hunting next week up in Babine Lake country.

My hunting this year has mostly been curtailed by an surgery a week after opening day. No lifting of etc etc for six weeks etc.

Sooooo, I will be using a custom 100+ year old 98 Mauser, chambered for the ubiquitous 7x57 Mauser cartridge, wearing an early Bausch scope, with heavy German #4 reticle, mounted in detachable claw base rings, fitted to matching bases mounted over the top of the receiver.

Very dry here right now. Animals are going to be where you find them in non traditional locations. We're seeing way more Deer/Elk/Moose/Bears in the local fields than normal.

Likely won't shoot anything but it will be a great change of pace to get out into the bush/mountains again.

ooh, i might of just undertook my 1 of hopefully a few unique hunts...

i stalked up along a ol logging trail, which borders the hunting area, which is in natural bush, a gulley, not very wide but surrounded by pine... good cover, always a deer in it.
alot of rain has fallen, flood down south , moderate rain here all day...

id been in side tinkering all day an needed to get out, picked the right time about 5,30..deer o clock...
parked the hilux at the bottom / start of the hunting area, an slowly stalked up , spying a Sambar stag half way up!
EEdeyTN.jpg

i set up, zoomed in, went tp pick up my gun and... the slung musta been under it an over she goes...
wanting to have shots on film, i mess around an end up watching the deer depart...

walked around lookin, cuttin thru the pine to reach other huntin area,... an get back to no schit within 100m of me lux an i put up two Sambar in the small young pine.... they bust across right to left an thru a clearing only 50m away broadsiding as they depart....

i raise an swing onto the first but no fur, so pick the 2nd about 20meters back..... big gun noise wackkkk....

i watch the deer at full gallop, stumble, hit the earth on its chest, bounce up an depart into the largest jam factory of blackberrys (photos tomorow/recovery)

, i hear alot of thrashing , i wait on the edge incase departure....until dark (5-7mins) then go up an check the scene...
sure enough good running marks, good skid marks, good blood.... good flattened trail into berrys an most likely just thrashing an slid down some meterage....oh joy.

180gr Speer .311 varget Awesome. pics to come.

Someone tried something unusual and different on my moose a couple weeks before I saw it.

But to contribute to the thread, I have been contemplating using my Hawkins for a deer this year.

Did spring bear for the first time in June. Also shot from a tree stand for the first time. Bought a Savage 110 Scout .308 and had an Athlon red dot put on it just for this bush bear hunting. Got a small one, maybe a second year bear. One shot, ran about 40 yards and done.

LOL
action police!!
Regardless, there are enough predators in the area to warrant a loaded rifle at all times. On the road in the Grizzly bear warning signs are massive and there are about 4 of them on the way in. If one were to present itself where that deer is laying...... you might see him at 25 yards..... you might not. I have been bumped many times in that spot by cougar, bears and wolves so yes, the rifle stays loaded, safety on. Smart enough to ensure the muzzle is always pointed in a safe direction, even for quick photos before the drag out.

For Me, why it's going to be a special hunt.

It's going to be the my 1st time hunting :D

Probably going to go with my 25-06 or 6.5x55?

Probably a deer that's going to be made into tasty sausage!
