Going black like so many other people have done due to the current political situation.

I've never owned a black gun, want to own one.

What I'm looking for is:
***-non-restricted (Pre C21)
***-semi-auto
***-shoots 223/5.56, 223 wylde etc
***-takes or can be adapted to take the AR pistol mags

I've heard not alot of good things about the Kodiak Defence WK-180, so I'm staying away from that one.

The two I've come to settle on are the H&K SL-8 and the WS-MCR/WX-MCR. The budget is $2k max for the rifle.
In that price range are there any others I may consider purchasing?

Have you owned either of these rifles or shot them? What did you like about them, and what you didn't like, are there generational problems?...
Any insight would be appreciated!

Depends on what you want it for. For my style of run-and-gun the SL8 was more muzzle-heavy than I would prefer... great in a medium/long range DMR role, though. You're probably not going to find an SL8 for $2K... more like $2500 all in, plus the magwell swap to take STANAG mags.

You're wise to avoid the WK180; the gen 2 may or may not be worth pursuing. Not many of them in the wild yet. Likewise the Templar... it seems promising, but who knows.

The good options are all more than $2K. If I was in your position I'd probably look for a lightly-used TAR21 for just over $2k, or a used X95 for a bit more.

The Templar looks cool, I think the change in the folding buttstock made it look more attractive. But I am not holding my breath on it. A few months ago everybody was laughing at the ugly design.

I went on youtube and also searched here. Please correct me if I am wrong but I couldn't find anything on accuracy.

hk sl8 everything else will fail
1 Vote for HK. German made guns are good I guess...
The new Crusader Arms "Templar" will go at least 2K rounds reliably.....
2k in rounds reliably is a good deal, they take AR mags, have heard of Crusader and was told they were reliable.

I guess my purpose would be making the rifle a varminator gun, shoot coyotes, wolves, gophers, pop cans etc. A run and gun, type gun, take it to a range and blast steel pretending they're bad guys. Then some target shooting too I guess... I thought they did have a mag-well for the AR-mags. I'm not a fan of $100 for a proprietary mag... I'm spending more than I usually would on a rifle just due to the fact this may be the only semi-auto I may own for the next foreseeable future. I think I'm leaning towards a more traditional style as opposed to a bull-pup style, just on the if I'm only going to own 1 principle...
Oh gosh if your at 2k just spend whatever is needed to get an X95. You can probably find one sub 2k in this climate.
Leaning more to the traditional style as opposed to bull-pup. But I'll keep an open mind I guess.
HK all the way
Another HK vote... nobody likes the WX-MCR eh...

I'm sure it hits what it aims at within reason. It would be a positive if it killed gophers and not the dirt beside them...

Everything Canadian made is going to be slapped together right now so fast so manufacturers can use up already bought extrusions before they're left holding the bag. I wouldn't buy anything Canadian made right now. Everyone's trying to bail out the water that's rushing into their boats.

Ask yourself if you were holding onto half a million in raw material already extruded to conform to your machining needs what would you want to do with it knowing it's gonna be completely useless if it doesn't get sold and made into a product by February at the latest.

Fair enough- that is a good point. I hadn't found any WX-MCR online via retail only second-hand via CGN and like.

WS has HK SL8-5 for $1999 if you are looking for one

Wow, that's a SMOKING deal.
Yea that's the deal I'm after, I'm wondering if its a black friday deal(ending today) or a c-21 deal.
Hera (and others, I think) makes a STANAG (AR mags) magwell for the SL8, but you'd need to either find a used one that already includes it or buy it over and above the cost of the rifle
I found a SL8 used with what did look like it had the STANAG magwell adapter, I am considering also buying it at a later time

WX-MCR seems to be the loser here

I provided accuracy results in Post 284 of the Templar Thread....

I know it’s not in your suggested options but: buy and SKS and what you got left in ammo.

This takes care of the HK pricing and the "good when fixed" 180 plateform

Never been an easier choice to make than this one. SL8 every day of the week. You are getting something that out of the box is reliable and accurate, superb worksmanship, trusted and reputable brand. It is also noticeably lighter recoiling (in my humble opinion).

BUT...based on your criteria, I don't think it can be adapted to take your regular AR PMAGs. I think it can be adapted for the G36 mags, but I am not well versed on that. Sticking with the OEM double stacked pinned/blocked 5 rounders is pretty cost-prohibitive (at around $100 a mag).

Also if your budget is 2K and that has no wiggle room, that may not meet your cost criteria.

WK180 - I have one and I would take the SL8 every time even though nothing has broken on my WK (yet). Mine is Generation 1.5 (original threaded non-HT CH). MCR in my opinion is just a slightly more reliable version of the WK, but by no means it is SL8 quality.

Agree with this completely and I should have thought about this possibility too. It runs similarly in price to the SL8 (slightly more) but will take the AR mags...but bullpups may not be for everyone...seems to be a like it or hate it proposition. I have one and it is super reliable and that is one firearm in which I will never relinquish ownership (never sell to anyone).
