What's your go-to grouse hunting setup?

For walking all day, a single-barrel hammer 16 with 2 1/2" 7 1/2; less than five pounds to carry.

1923 Parker PH grade 26” bbl chokes are imp mod and light mod loaded with 1 ounce no 6 roll your own back up or change up 20ga superposed lightning chokes imp cyl and mod 7/8 oz no6 I also use these with bismuth loads for ducks

When I hit the grouse woods I'm looking for an easily carried and maneuverable gun and I don't pay too much attention to gauge and barrel length. I hunt over setters and I only shoot at birds on the wing. I typically adjust the load to the quarry more than worry about what gauge.

I might take my Francotte 28 gauge at 4 pounds, 10 oz

It could be the early fifties solid rib Browning Superposed 20 gauge with 26" barrels

I might grab my J & W Tolley (I sure would pick this one if hunting with Pinfire), a 5 pound, single 29” barrelled 12 gauge from England.

If it's a nice day and the woods won't be too thick I sometimes grab the Purdey, a 12 gauge 25 1/2" 6 pound 3 oz open choked grouse killing machine.

The only consistency in my grouse hunting setup is me, my dog and a shotgun.

On our trip north this year, I thoroughly enjoyed my "new" Belgian 16ga SxS. 27.5" barrels, 2 1/2" chambers so I was shooting Gamebore Regal Game 6's. The gun is not superlight - about 6.5# on my scales - but it balances and points very well for me.

I bought a Savage 24 .22/20 gauge campers companion in the mid 80's and have killed hundreds of grouse with it over the years.

Two years ago I came across a badly abused .22/410 through a yard sale. A new butt stock, some work on the rust and now my wife has claimed it. I like the Model 24's much more than the Model 42.

Absolutely love grouse hunting with a Franchi Affinity 20ga.

If I'm hunting the northern birds that almost refuse to flush, the Stevens 22-410 might make an appearance.

Variety starting with a 50's Ithaca 37 FWT 20 ga followed by a 28ga Cooey 840 or a Savage 24 .22/.410 old side barrel selector when they actually regulated the barrels to hit the same POI. For kicks this year a 1867 Snider with shortened 24ga brass.....60gr FG/ 1/8" cork 20ga wad/equal volume of #8 shot followed by another 1/8" cork 20ga wad and some Elmer's glue to seal things up. Depends on the mood.

Rem 410/3" pump, no 6,then a couple no,4 good,to 60 yards in air.
Single shot when i take my atv, no 6, 3 in looking to get a birds no shot in breasts

Beretta 686 SP1 12ga with #6 shot but thinking of dumping this and going with a Benelli 828U in 20 ga. :)

I used to use my Savage 410/.22 but almost always take the 20/.22 since buying it. I sometimes revert to the Ruger 10/22 when the birds are skittish.
