Shotgunning moose

Not a hunter, but in reality most animals can be taken with most firearms. I think hunters sometimes get carried away with the details. I understand if you do it often, it's a honed craft and the details increase your averages and reduce the animals suffering.

Couple of fellows up at our moose camp have used slug guns with great results. Both didn't go further than 70 yards after the shot and both were shot at under 100 yards. One used a Rem AccuTip and the other was a Partition (both sabots). If I had a desire to use a slug gun and at the ranges we usually shoot them at, I'd probably use some of the stockpile of Remington Buck Hammers I have (now discontinued). They hit like a freight train and leave a blood trail that Ray Charles could find. Personally at the moment, I use a 45-70 Marlin Trapper slinging a hard cast 405gr FNGC at around 1600fps and they work pretty much just like the Buck Hammers.

A local tree farm calls Natives when the moose are eating their inventory and provides them with a 12ga shotgun and foster slugs.

As law abiding firearms owners we also must abide by the regulations that hunting imposes on certain species like minimum energy for ethical kills.
some species have assigned different minimum regs-even when it comes to bows.

Except maybe where one MP has their 22 gauge for ptarmigan, moose and black bear?

My double rifle is regulated for 30 yards. It's set up for bear hunting. I was just playing around with challenger slugs and my 1301 comp and at 40 yards can keep them all on the black. 5 slugs into 6" offhand with a bead. I plan on using it for bear but I think it'll make a nice backup for moose in the thick as most the moose my buddies shoot are under 50 yards. I'll still have a rifle for hunting more open areas. Not sure I'll get out for moose this coming year or not but if I do I'll post back

I've shot a pile of big whitetail bucks with Challenger 12g slugs. Several out to 75yds. Complete pass-throughs be chest or shoulder hits.
Out to 60ish yds I'd hunt moose with confidence. Animals don't travel far with 3/4inch holes through their windbags

A good friend of mine has taken three pretty good bulls with slugs out of a Remington 870 Wingmaster with a brass bead.

I noticed another strange item in the new BC synopsis; with the addition of air guns as a category they now allow air guns to take ALL upland birds, yet you can only take ptarmigan, turkey and grouse with rimfire? Really odd.

There are people in the MNR who need to justify their position so every few years the regs need to be amended - keep the salary coming TVM.

A 12ga foster slug perhaps. Federal trophy copper 12ga sabot slugs start at 2000fps and are still going 1619fps@100yds. Drop is significant but with laser range finders that's only a problem if you're not putting in the work to figure out your drops at distance.

I have no reason to use a shotgun, nor can I legally as stated above (I'm in BC), but if I had to it sure seems doable.

The Sabot slugs are better than the standard conical slugs but at 200 yards its still in the dirt. Alberta has a few BP and shotgun zones just for this reason, no stray shots going for a mile.

We have a river valley next to the farm with lots of rolling hills and trees where most places are less than 100 yards to shoot, so any 12 gauge with a front and rear sight can hit an animal. My 870 has a short smoothbore with iron sights and hits coffee cans all day at 60 yards. A broadside deer at a 100 yards is not a hard target either, although with just a front bead only is difficult to aim.

It'll be neat if you can make it happen. I say go for it!

Anyone ever use a shotgun with slugs for moose? I was playing around with some slugs today thinking about spring bear hunting and the thought crossed my mind as most moose I come across in the fall are less than 50 yards a slug gun would be just fine. It's something I haven't heard much of. I'd surely pack a rifle for longer shots

Is it proper to answer a question with a question?

Why not?

Was curious if anyone chooses to specifically use a shotgun for moose is all. I'm confident a slug will drop any moose. I'd be willing to try it if I go moose hunting this year. At least if there's no moose I'm set for birds

That would be me. It boils down to needing a shotgun for my controlled hunt and I'm confident in the gun and my limitations, so I never bothered taking a rifle for moose. I have never shot at a moose with my Ithica yet but if I'm presented with a shot, I'll certainly take it.
