Hi
I need one for my 6.5x47 Lapua brass, my Lee decapping die doesn’t work, any suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Have you tried older RCBS decap dies with the small decap pin. Old style Lyman 310 die sets use a smaller pin. RCBS still sells small pins. You could make one up out of brass rod. Drill a tight fitting hole in one end that fits the decap pin and use a hammer to tap primers out. RCBS sells three decap pins. Large, small and headed pins. Lyman 310 universal decap die but you need the tong tools or an older press that takes the smaller 310 dies.

RCBS makes (or made) two sizes of universal de-capper body - larger one is labeled "RCBS UNI DECAP HD 4" - on the body - the box says for .27 - .45 CAL. Is also a smaller one - nothing stamped on body - on top end is stamped "RCBS" and "S". I have used the second smaller one to de-cap .223 Rem cases with Small Rifle primers. The "HD" marked one seems to have a longer and fatter diameter threaded rod to it, compared to the one marked "S".

For de-capping milsurp 5.56 with crimped in primers, I often use the "punch" thing from an elderly 22-250 LEE LOADER set - maybe Lee still sells those separately?

I did not know there was flash hole size differences - must have been lucky so far - about .080" diameter - but I read on Internet is some flash holes made closer to .060" (.059" - .062") - besides the small and large primer size. So, apparently combinations exist in various brass - small flash hole with Large rifle primer; larger flash holes with Small rifle primer. So de-capping pin diameter might be more important than I thought.

Lapua used 157 flash hole on their 6.5 x47, will try searching the rcbs, my sizing die by Forster uses the small pin

I had read suggestion on Internet to chuck up a standard size pin in drill press or lathe, and polish (or turn) down to desired diameter - I have never tried to do so - might be an option for you??

Is typical here that I try to make that kind of stuff to use - sometimes mess up try No. 1 or No. 2 - usually get one to work "good enough" - I tend not to like to buy (more) stuff, if I can make it. The hardware store in town has a decent stock of Grade 8 1/4" x 2" bolts and larger / longer - sometimes feels like I keep them in business with purchases of those things.

Various sources on Internet says Lapua uses 1.5 mm flash holes in their 6.5x47 and some other brass - that is 0.0590" diameter. I think "industry standard" is about 2 mm flash hole - that would be 0.0787". Appears there has been several attempts to drill out larger, or to swage smaller, to gain accuracy advantage.

Lyman makes an adapter that threads into a standard press with an inside thread that allows any 310 die to be threaded into it. Just Google Lyman 310 7/8 adapter.

I've made a few depriming punches for the 6.5 Creedmoor Lapua brass, which also has the small .060" flash hole.

I used a .055" drill bit in a lathe to drill a hole in the end of a piece of 1/4" brass rod, then took the fluted end of the drill bit off with a grinder. Epoxy the remaining shank of the drill bit into the hole it just drilled and you're done.

ted_dent - looks very much like de-capper punch as was included in old days Lee Loader - would use like a punch - tap with hammer to drive primer out of case, which was sitting on a collar with a hole through it. I see that ad says the pin is .055", so that should work in small flash hole brass that is nominally .060" or thereabouts.

Through my work bench, is a stepped hole - smaller hole all the way through - I set garbage can underneath to catch driven out primers - then the larger concentric hole only shallow - fits and holds that collar in place for de-capping cases by hand. I most commonly use that for de-capping cases with crimped in primers - lets me de-prime the cases without running them into a die - then into the stainless pin tumbler to clean those cases and primer pockets.

I will just stick to a factory decapping die / small pin if I can find one, no tools and not mechanically inclined

I shoot Lapua brass for 6.5 x 47L. As others have mentioned, you can easily modify a "Lee Universal Decapping Pin" (they sell for about $5 each). I chucked the Lee decapping pin in my hand drill, and I used the file on my Leatherman multitool to turn the pin down to the required diameter. No caliper measurements necessary, just keep removing material and test it in a case flash hole until its fits easily.

I use this modified Lee decapping pin in a Frankford Arsenal Hand Deprimer tool. The Lee decapping pin fits perfectly in the FA depriming tool. I own two of these FA tools, one for large primer, one for small primer cases. Its a great tool, very quick (faster than on-press IMO), and no primer decapping debris mess on my bench or press.
