looking for info on action choices.

I like the single shot platform but you are limited to strength of actions. small frame martini , stevens 44 1/2 .
I think the rolling block and Ballard will not have the strength for smokeless loads

Now for a bolt action I am sure someone has come up with a usable action??

Any thoughts?

I was always intrigued by using a 358 rifle caliber. Cast and load everything from 125gr 38 bullets/subsonic with trail boss to meh loads,.to full stopping loads

35 rem
358 win
358 norma mag
35 whelen.

I mean you can download to any power level, without the case capacity you can't go full power. Could have a 38 level, 357 level, 35 rem...........

Good luck. A person here been bumping his WTB 357 Handi rifle for almost a year, nobody parting with them. Same with NR Contender frames. AS you can get 357 Rem max 14" barrels. I have a 10".

I have a encore with a 357 Max MGM barrel It is super fun to shoot 20" barrel 2.5 lb trigger , Leupold scope , but i was looking to build a more classic looking single shot. With the way things are going with components getting hard t find 357 Maximum brass is made every so often by starline .

Someone posted a suggestion of 357 Herrett ..this might be a easy to reload and find components round, ,30/30 parent case. easy to find dies, same choice of bullets ,not quite as fast as the 357 Maximum ????

Small Martini will be suitable for the 357 magnum but not the 357 Maximum

I have a Large Martini chambered for the 357 Maximum and it's a great rifle for hunting out of a tree stand for ranges under 100 yds.

I have it throated for long 225 grain Spire Point Speer bullets and it will knock down a Bear or Deer without issues.

I also have a SMALL heavy wall Martini chambered for the 257 Maximum and I have to be careful with over all length of the cartridge or it won't accept the round

Where have I heard that one before??

All it takes is a bit of due diligence on your part and of course the several hundred dollars for one of those actions, as well as several hours of your time making up proper stocks and installing sights. If you're insisting on using a scope, make sure you leave enough metal on the barrel so you have a decent surface to drill and tap etc

This isn't a project to take lightly. Making up a bolt action or lever action in such a cartridge is way easier and likely cheaper in the long run.

It isn't bad, if you can find a beater action, such as a Ruger #3 as all f the wood is available and it's relatively easy to rebarrel.

I was hopeful at finding a Miller or a Falling Block Works or a Clerke ...all I need is the action

LOL! (and I don't mean that disrespectfully) But you are running maybe 20 or 30 years behind on this.

Bo Clerke quit making single shot actions at least that long ago. I have a couple of the leftover castings. Not quite a High Wall. Not a success.

Dunno how many FBW Actions made it in to Canada, but I doubt it would be hard to count out loud. Same for Miller. Christ, I doubt it would be hard to count ALL the Miller actions out loud. Although, if you hit up the right guys it is a remote possibility. Try the ASSRA Forum, and be clear that you are in Canada!

I would look for a 44 1/2 Stevens, a Win 1885, or a CPA action. in about that order of possibility.

Martini's are nice, in small sizes, but I don't have much good to say about the big ones, as far as good looks go.

I love the Falling block actions, would love to have one of the smallest FBW actions for a project, as well as several Win 1885's, but I have seen too many of the last go by and I flinched at the prices...Then...

I know I am 20-30yrs behind but all those shooters that had them are getting to the age that they might part ways with them.. I dwell in the old stuff Ballards, Stevens, Hepburns Highwalls

I am looking to find something for a build maybe someone had a dream years ago to build something on a old action sitting in the drawer??
I know there is a bunch of gun fondlers out there that just buy to hold ,tell stories and stroke the barrels with a oil rag but i want to drag some old rifle out of hiding and shoot it.
