Taking a handgun to and back to Canada

Well that does it for me, when my wife and I pop down to Montana for weekend matches, we take at least 8 handguns. I'm not paying good money to re-
import guns that I bought and paid cost and taxes for, with money that I originally paid taxes on. I'll just look for more matches in Canada where I spend more money on gas to get there. It feels like my wallet is getting screwed either way! I guess I should thank Junior for screwing up my retirement years.

The above link is how we did our import permits, it took some back and forthing to get sh!t sorted, but in the end only a couple days to get the permit.
Only question I have that they have no answered, is since the permit is good for 4 months, does that include multiple crossings or just one?

Global Affairs says that it is valid only for one crossing.

It could well be in their computer records since they track you every time you cross the US border by US Border Patrol and when you return via the CBSA. Both sides have access to the same data via your passport scan. I was asked once "when was the last time you entered the US" as he watched his screen. He smiled, gave me my passport and I weas on my way. They seldom ask a question they don't know the answer to or know what they want to hear.

Very true. I was going into the US driving my wife’s car and the US border agent asked if it was my car. I said “I wouldn't admit owing a pos like that, it’s my wife’s “. He almost smiled but caught himself and said have a good day..

One other time when returning to Canada the guy said it’s been quite some time since I’ve seen you returning. I said , hmmm, I come through he at least once a month sometimes more. He replied “yes but I’ve personally not been here when you’ve come through”. The computer has all the info…

finally got my Excol account setup, looks like it will be pretty easy to apply now, much easier than doing it as a non account holder

Agreed Rob - I did an application online yesterday for my annual Florida Open Trip next week - was very easy.

Everyone - Any gun dealer can provide FRT#s for your particular firearm.
The constantly-updating database is in their online portal to the Canadian Firearms Program, under "Search FRT"

Here's a few I ran across:
