newb 30-06 vs 308 vs 300wm?

Sometimes it depends on the gun you intend to buy. I really like the Tikka T3/x. They're smooth, incredibly accurate and there's a decent aftermarket out there if you want to pimp them out.
That being said, they only come in one action length. Long. They use different bolt stops for short action and smaller calibers but the action length is the same, regardless of the chambering. That being the case, I decided to go with a 30-06 for my main rifle, since the receiver was going to be a long action anyway.
I actually prefer a 308 as a do-it-all cartridge out to about 400 yards. But since I was going with a rifle that will have a long action, regardless of the chambering I choose, I figured why not take advantage of it and try to pump up the horsepower a bit. Just something to think about.

Since you are a newb as you call yourself, and ask advice on the 308 vs 30-06 vs 300 WM, I assume you are looking for an expert’s solid opinion…and that is why I am here to set you straight.
308 is for women and youths who need to learn the magical and mysterious art of shooting and hunting.
300WM is for “man” with small hands and large aggressive pitbulls, who sport a man bun and tight jeans with stars and pretty colours.
Now! We will get to the brass tacks of the matter and that is the famous, legendary, caliber that hunters and gatherers all over the world sing ballads about…yes! The 30-06.
That is man’s man caliber, even the legendary and quite secretive Jay O’Connell himself!!! Praised that caliber over his beloved one. Jay himself! Said he would take 30-06 for big game over the rifle which made him known in his closest circle and Mr. O’Connell HIMSELF said it is the only caliber trusted and fun to shoot for game larger than coons.

308. 150-165 grain for deer. 180 grain for the big stuff. For the environmentally conscious, 130 grain Barnes TTSX for deer, 168 grain TTSX for the big stuff. Added benefit in my book is the 308 works well in short barrels, so you can have a carbine-length gun that’s compact and handy if hunting the thick stuff.
This is a 30cal thread so he’s probably wondering why you threw in the 7PRC ….

I’ve owned all three Cals and have never felt under or over-gunned with them. I still have 308 & 30-06 in the fold.
As others have suggested, find something that fits ergonomically first and then decide on Cal based on availability of ammo in your neck of the woods.

Try to find ammo for 7 PRC..you can find 30-06 and .308 ammo anywhere.
The best caliber is the one the OP can shoot well, standing on his hind legs.
I would stay with a proven caliber..not the new fad calibers developed for the games.
My hunting gun is a Winchester 70 in 30-06 that have been proven in 40 years of hunting moose, black bear and deer.

308 or 30-06 can’t go wrong with either ! 300 WM is too much cartridge for the average hunter and game . JMO RJ

The recoil would be less than a 30-06 with 180's as well...

From what you listed the 30-06 or 308 are both goof to go. I'd give the edge to the 308 if you're looking for a lighter rifle (since it's a short action cartridge) or if you plan to use the same rifle for target shooting and hunting, if you don't reload (308 target ammo is plentiful, the 30-06 not so much).
