Hey guys

I just picked up a beauty Model 70 in .270win. I have a set of RCBS dies on the way and plan to pick up some powder and bullets to get a load worked up over the summer.

What are guys having good luck with for powder and bullets?

I currently only hunt whitetails, as far as big game goes, and the farthest shot possible in the area I hunt is maybe 250 yards. So I'm leaning towards a 130gr Hornady SSt or Nosler BT. I have lots of Varget handy for my .223 and .308, so may see what I can do with that powder, but would consider others if it's likely to yield better results.

Any experience would be appreciated. Feel free to DM me if you have brass or bullets you might part with, or other advice.
 
130 SST’s can blow up on deer at 270 Win speeds.
Lots of powders you can use. H4831,RL22,IMR 7828, 6.5 Staball, H4350, Superformance etc

Most accurate load I've ever come up with was a 150gr partition under a moderate load of imr4350. Probably only 2750-2800fps but half MOA in my rifle and plenty enough for deer at 250m.

edit - that said I think the 130gr bullet in the 270win just makes sense. It is what made the cartridge popular as a high speed flat shooting cartridge when compared with the 30-06 it was derived from, and modern premium bullets make up for any shortfalls in sectional density compared with the 140/150gr bullets.

Maybe I should hang on to my stuff, all I need is some brass and a left hand 270 rifle....

You will do very well with SST 130 grains. For a max hunting distance of 250 yards, keep the muzzle velocity at around 2900 fps. Other inexpensive and good options include Interlock 130 and Speer hot-cor 130 grains ($34 for 100 bullets for Speer). There are some pet loads for a 270 win: 60 grains H4831, 55 grains IMR 4350 and 55-56 H4350. Also IMR 4064, using the O'Connor load of 49.5 grains. These powders are all available right now. Now for the primers, that's another story....
 
A standard .270 win load with 130gr bullet is 56-57 grs of IMR4831 I use a mag primer but many don't. Killed game from the muzzle to 600 yards.
 
Many would disagree, but I would avoid 130’s and try the 140 Interlock or one of the 150 grain options
 
To each their own but I have shot moose with 130,140 and 150gr and couldn't tell the difference in killing power or penetration. The old Dominion 160gr KKSP 's I never did recover. Barnes used to make a 180gr RN believe it or not.
 
I’d skip the SST’s for sure. 140gr Interlock and RL22 or H1000. Currently using Barnes TTSX 110gr at just over 3300 fps and they are working fantastic!
 
I have had good luck with 150gr interlocks and ~ 57gr of H4831. Great groups and velocity over 2800 fps. I have always been a nosler fan but their recent unobtanium status has made me look to other bullets.
 
4350 and 4831 are the long term favourites for this caliber. Buy whichever you can find, or another powder of similar speed. Work up and find what groups. Don't worry about velocity. No matter what you use, it will be over-kill on deer.
 
There are many good gun powders for the 270 Win., check-out reloading manuals or go online. The powder that works the best in my 270 Win. is Alliant Reloder #26, however, it is almost impossible to find at this moment.
 
The 130 grain hornady sst will be explosive on deer at typical 270 velocities. Choose an nosler accubond, partition or a barnes ttsx. It's hard to beat H4831sc with 59-60 grains in a 270.
