Kodiak Defence K9 PCC Review / info thread

Crimped ammo? 9MM uses a taper crimp. I suspect your "out of battery" experience took place because of bullet set back as the round was forced into the chamber by the recovering bolt.. I am not aware of any factory ammo in 9MM that uses a rolled crimp. The explanation is weak in the extreme. The 9MM headspaces off the case mouth so a roll crimp is not going to work all that well. Would you please weigh your buffer and bolt together for me please.

Sounds like there is a bit of beta testing going on here. Either that or quality control is hit and miss. When we pay over a grand for a rifle it would be nice if they worked flawlessly out of the box. A "friends" Scorpian Carbine works flawlessly OTB as did his Beretta Storm and Ruger PCC, why we have to put up with the drama queens eg my FX9 and apparently, some of the Kodiak K9s is really quite unacceptable but apparently inevitable.

I will try to get weight for you shortly, it's an interesting system that traps the buffer/spring so you have to take off the buffer tube, Not a pin like an AR. The whole bolt rides on 2 lower rods and the bolt carrier thins its diameter to go through a hole in the back of the receiver that is smaller in diameter than a standard AR15, then it contacts a buffer/spring in the tube. Not sure if this is similar to an FX9, I have not handled one.

For my out-of-battery, the case blew at the back. I will attach a couple of quick pictures I had taken that show the blown case and other deformed live rounds.

That's where they let go. My two blew out 360 degrees leaving most of the case in the chamber. Same issue. Bullet set back.

The FX9 uses a pin like an AR. My OEM buffer weighed only 2.9 Oz. Presently running a 11oz buffer. In my case the heavier buffer ended the swollen cases. Gun runs really well. I now have all my mags holding the bolt back after adding height to the follower using Steel Weld.

Another update: ran another 150 rounds through my K9 today.

Everything ran flawlessly - tried both Sig Sauer 115 grain FMJ and the 147 grain version with PMAGs and glock OEM.
Seems like there is definitely a break in period required for this gun - either that or QC is suspect. Either way, I am happy mine is functioning normally.

Ran 200 PMC bronze as suggested by Kodiak and had the same failure to feed, but not and Out of battery. Waiting on an explanation from Kodiak but haven't heard anything in a few days.

buffer is unchangeable because it is its own design, I was hoping to throw the buffer from my PWS 9mm AR in there to try but no luck.

Using the charging handle seems to feed a round fine, but using the bolt release jams up the round as above- also seems to happen more as it dirties up. Never happens during firing, just on first round.

SFRC is running a good deal on these right now. Free shipping and 10 mags. Came here, did some reading and put my credit card away... thanks CGN! Don't need another project. The idiot Liberals banned the only PCC I liked (Beretta).

The CX4 Storm was/is an underrated gem, I'm surprised more weren't purchased.

this might be a dumb question since im new

The top and middle one doesnt seem that deformed. would it still be useable?

It's not recommended to ever use damaged or odd looking ammunition. Is a 35 cent round worth some potential damage to a firearm or injury to self?

That being said, I'd probably just tear it down and reload it fixing it in a die. Ill admit ive unwisely fired ammo similarly damaged with the result being inaccurate shots. Avoid. Just put it aside or give it someone who wants to rebuild the ammo.

2 cents.

Can anyone tell me how the Kodiak defence K9 is to shoot left handed. I had a fx9 for a day but felt like my face was being sand blasted

Shot one today…I’m a lefty and it was uncomfortable how much gas/debris was hitting me in the face. It’s unfortunate as it seems like a good gun…

DONT UNDER ANY CIRCUNSTANCE attempt to fire those shortened rounds
Pressures would be sky high and your gun will definately not like the result and most certainly you won't either.
Those round nose bullets should not be jamming your gun like that. Contact kodiac Defense.

Any idea who would offer spare parts like firing pins , extractors , uppers, etc for these? Rather have the parts handy than it be offline waiting for Canada post.

Looked on Kodiak’s site. No luck.

And the retailers are deciding how much they are going to take for their inventory. Good luck buy Canadian... right

I bought the K9 and have put around 300 rounds through mine. No issues with 115 grain and magpul mags made for the glock 17. I did have some of the same stovepipe issues running 147 grain factory through it. It would cycle some of them but there were a few rounds where the rounds were shoved into the casing and compressed.

I am happy with the gun overall and my 9mm pistol will use the 147 grain no problem so it's all good

This also happened at a shoot I was at this weekend, upon a disassembled inspection of the rifle I seen there was no safety mechanisms put in place to prevent an OOB detonation on these guns. Wasn't my rife, and after seeing this I wont be picking one up either.
