Thoughts on the new Sako 90 Product Line? Announced Today.

This double plunger thing just does not do it for me.

Wish they had repositioned the fixed ejectors placement on the 85 instead

Leave it to SAKO to make the dovetails straight and then add a recoil lug to them far end so you can’t move the rings along the length.

Nice variety of models and no doubt well made though

Some of the models include new Optilock mounting rails (specifically models available with open sights), while the Peak and Quest models have Picatinny mounts milled into the receiver.

So many better rifles out there for cheaper. I won't be giving them any more my harder and money after the POS carbon light I had That would not eject. And the way sako and stoeger Canada handled it.

Maybe I am just lucky but my Tikka and Sako rifles have been superb;however, they have also been ramping up prices and their 90 is no exception.Beretta has us by the you know what’s…But it bugs me that everything gets ramped up for no good reason.
Is it me ? Cause $90,000 pick up trucks, $1500 Sage Fly rods, $2million run of mill house( wet coast)and $4000 factory rifles rub me the wrong way.

What is the issue with the bedding of the 85? I hadn't heard that.

The little in-between recoil lug plate (tuning fork) is a disaster. We bedded a few carbo lites because the customers had difficulties to zero after taking the action out of the stock to clean. Bedding is not straight forward. The best way we thought was to toss the tuning fork in the bin and use a Tikka T3 recoil lug which also fits into the 85 action, then epoxy bed like a T3. Maybe even better would be to buy a T3 right away.

Ok. I see what you meant. You meant glass or pillar bedding (or re-bedding) an 85. I had read your post as referring to "the bedding" of the rifle, meaning the original wood bedding. Has anyone had problems with the original wood bedding? The recoil-lug arrangement you mention is "Rube Goldberg" for sure, but it seems to work. I've noticed that most (maybe all) long-action 85s (and maybe some others) have two recoil cross-bolts (my .270 does). It would seem that, even with the weird recoil-lug setup, Sako has reinforced their rifles against stock splitting pretty well.

These euro marketing people. I can't really get my head around it time to time. They offer sako 90 in carbon fiber, plastic, laminate and wood stocks. None have quick detach sling swivels, year is 2023.

None have m-lok or arca or even factory pic rail for bipods. Varmint model is laminate with no adjustable cheek or length of pull and a single front swivel stud. But they offer both integral pic rail receivers and dove tail receivers.

Same people just had S20 model line with QD and adjustable cheek risers. Same people.

I agree with most points however the Sako 90 is the replacement of the more traditional type hunting rifle Sako85. The S20 might not be as accepted as they initially thought and therefore the step back. The market for a "normal" high quality hunting rifle might be much larger than a semi PRS rig?? I think it is a good move from Sako but would also question if a traditional hunter couldn't get used to QD slings. They do need new products for next years Shot Show/IWA so maybe then. Being in the business of manufacturing aftermarket stocks I can say it is very difficult to please all when it comes to stock fittings. If You have a black cow they want a brown one. Some traditional high seat hunters even have a problem with a sling stud on the forend. So flush fitted Spartan adapters can be a solution etc. In Europe very few hunters... just about zero would use an Arca rail on their hunting rifles, yet they hunt just about daily. Pica rails, yes a few. It is much easier for the traditional hunter to accept a carbon barrel or even carbon stock than fittings that they neither need nor have bipods/slings for.

Are new guns really better? Aside from improved ejecting, which never should have been an issue in the first place, the increase in price doesn’t correspond to increased performance imo

I like them but at those prices I don't know. Interestingly from what I could see, the hunter is offered in some 'normal' short action chamberings and then rest are all magnum?? No plain Jane 30-06 and the like seems different

Not sure I understand your point here. The 90s come with sling swivel studs that take QD sling swivels. My 85 arrived with that setup, and the QD swivels came with it, separately in the box. Assume the same will be true for the 90.

I wonder whether the 90 will have the single-set trigger as an option. I have it on my 85 and love it.
