Looking for a shotgun, any brands to avoid?

Been out of the loops for a long time when it comes to firearms and I am looking to purchase a shotgun, pump, 12 gauge, are there any brands that you should just avoid? It is hard to go by reviews anywhere these days as so many of them are fake.

avoid anything turkish made, id suggest a Winchester sxp, tons of models to suit your taste, if you want to spend a little more the browning BPS is a very cool shotgun with bottom eject. I wouldn't get a Remington 870 however some people say the newer ones are worth buying. Mossberg 500 and maverick 88 are not quality guns either.
 
While I would hesitate to buy a Turkish "off-brand", a lot of that hesitation would be from your intended use. The BPS is a good shotgun, but then so are the 870's and the Mossberg 500's. An 870 Express is the economy model and should be looked over carefully by someone knowledgeable.
 
Winchester SXP is made in Turkey. That being said, I like mine a lot. The inertia-assist is quite nice when sliding the action after each shot. Can confirm the new production Rem 870 are a step in the right direction. My new Fieldmaster is significantly better finished than the Express model it replaced.
 
The turkish SXP is pretty good IMHO- I have one and the speed pump action is pretty good fun on the skeet field. Ones to avoid.... well the issue is that any mechanical thing can have problems. Some will be perfect, some will be pretty good and some will be less good. The chances of each change with the brand but even the high end stuff can have problems. Ideally you can try the gun out at a club before you buy it to make sure it fits well enough and works. If it checks these boxes then I'd likely go for it if within the budget.

Avoid anything Turkish and your first recommendation is an SXP which is made in Turkey....

Agree with everything except Remington. The 870s being produced under the new owners are much improved but more expensive.

I'd advise the OP to avoid anything made in China. Quality control varies widely. I'd also suggest not getting any shotgun fed from a detachable box magazine. They handle poorly and don't feed as well as a tube magazine.
 
He may have been better to say "avoid anything Turkish made to cheap Turkish specifications". Some of the Turkish shotguns that aren't made to a low price point are actually quite good.

I agree! I have about half a dozen of excellent guns that were made in Turkey. Shotguns and pistols. I’m very happy with all of them.
 
Attempting to state all Turkish firearms should be avoided is wrong. Many firearm manufacturers have some of their parts made in Turkey. Some Turkish wood is preferred by many shooters.
To the original poster . . What type of shotgun action and gauge are you looking to purchase? Perhaps others can give some specific recommendations.
 
When it comes to 12ga pump guns I'm a big fan of Mossberg. I prefer the location of the slide release on the Mossberg over Remingtons (behind trigger guard vs infront), and while I don't completely discount turkish guns (I have a turkish single shot and a turkish semi auto) I just don't see the point in buying a turkish pump gun when I can get a Mossberg for the same price or damn close to it.

I've got a 500, previously had a Maverick 88 but sold that to a friend because I switched to left handed and the Mav88 has a crossbolt safety and I find those a pain to use wrong-handed. 500 has a tang safety, much better for me personally. Both guns have been very reliable for me, and have killed a pile of grouse and ducks.

My only complaint about the 500 platform is extra barrels are stupid expensive. If you think you might want extra barrels I would highly advise you look for a combo package, I got the security/field combo 500 and I am very happy with it. There are a lot of package options for the 500s, guns that come with 2 or 3 barrels and some combination of turkey, field, security, and rifled barrels.
 
I've had almost all the shotguns listed, and if I were getting a first one, and was on a budget, I would go Maverick 88. It ain't pretty, but its cheap and it works good. The Browning BPS is way expensive, and I agree with the previous poster, it's heavy and clunky. In fact I was going to buy a BPS, put it up to my shoulder, then tried the Maverick, and put the BPS back.
