Looking for a shotgun, any brands to avoid?

I know it wasn't you Suther who suggested the 870 but you did seem to agree with the suggestion hence my remark.
I do agree that screw in chokes make the gun more inherently versatile but I also stand by my earlier remark in that they are overrated and I'm not alone in that thought either. Just the other day I was shooting skeet with a skeet choke in my gun and some of the guys wanted to shoot a round of trap. I didn't have my choke tubes with me and shot a round of 16 yard with my skeet tube in anyway and while I wasn't inkballing the targets the breaks were very good. I've also shot 27 yard handicap trap with an IC choke tube and had pretty consistent breaks, I don't recommend an IC choke for 27 yard but I'd be comfortable knowing the targets will break. Lots of old trap shooters are adamant that you need a full choke for 16 yard.

Seems to me that whenever a new guy asks what pump they should get, the common sense answer is to buy a good used 870 and then sell it off when your tastes change. The hold their value and they just plain work. Why overcomplicate things?

+1. When someone asks for advice on which shotgun to buy the answer should be based on an assessment of what is best for them not what your favourite shotgun happens to be.

As others have said I would avoid Turkish shotguns. I don't care if some people have owned them I never have. for durability Remington 870 . the older ones are better than the newer ones . Mossberg 500 . very reliable . Maverick 88 . heard they have one bug to work out. some pin that slides out during heavy usage ? lock tite Blue would fix that I'm assuming. Browning BPS. a couple of neighbor's have them and love them . bottom feeding bottom ejecting. those all have duel action slide bars. next . Ithaca model 37 Winchester Model 12 they are excellent shotguns . single action slide bars . stood the test of time .

I'd go for an older 870 Remington or if you have the coin an older Remington Wingmaster. some are in 2.5 inch only and some chamber 3 inch shells . then a Mossberg 500 would be next . if you go to a gun store remember a lot of the guys behind the counter especially the young guys just want to make a sale. don't buy crap . pay once and don't have any regrets . if you buy used look it over well and take a buddy who is in the know with you . and if your buying at a show buyer beware. don't pay too much and take and old gun savvy friend with you who is not in a rush . buy him lunch after. good luck . if in doubt go to a store and buy a brand new Mossberg 500 .

I agree! I have about half a dozen of excellent guns that were made in Turkey. Shotguns and pistols. I’m very happy with all of them.
+1.

i have a hatsan 612 in left hand that is great (thanks to your recommendation) let alone the 1911 tisas canuck in 9mm that i tried to sale during or just before frost and i still have it and like it more now than before ...

you can find some 2 3/4 inch wingmaster too but i always preferred the ones with magnum on them that can accept 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells...

When did they chamber a 2.5" only 870 wingmaster?

I would avoid any brands that haven't been on the market for at least 10 years, because the cheap Turkish brands may not be around if you need parts.

I have had a few 870s over the years. Some are better than others.
If I were to get another it would be an older wing master.

BPS
Benelli nova

MY mistake DUH . thanks Gentleman . I meant to say 2 3/4 inch shells . lol . typing fast or as fast as I could and made a boo boo . I've never been afraid of 2 3/4 inch shell guns that only shoot that size . if the price is right . yes I screwed up. don't beat me up anymore please lol .

Either the 870 or the mossberg 500 would be my choice.
The 500 combo were pretty common and were very usefull.
If you are so inclined there are lots of aftermarket quality parts for both platforms on the market.
As for mag fed pump shot guns the only one i have any experience with is the Valtro.
Made for some branch of the Italian military back in the day.
Very good, very smooth.
It is the one i carry with me in the bush daily. Tough, light, easy to sling. Easy to tailor the type of rnd and sequence.
The major downside is magazine availability. Virtually impossible to find anymore.
Good thing i bought several when i did

Well this was entertaining a lot of comments based on internet regurgitation with no practical experienced a few knowledgeable comments some answers didn't even address the question .
Price point seems to always be the desiring factor if your not willing to put money out for quality then you buy junk
Today's market is 90% junk
Browning bps good quality but not suitable for everyone I personally don't like the feel of them but they are the best design and quality on today's markets I have never had to fix one since they came out in 1978
Benelli Nova or super Nova excellent quality but goes against everything a shotgun should be as far as handling bulky crude rough action
Remington field master good $ value with decent shoot ability
Mossberg 500 king of crude but they kind of work
That's it everything else is price sales and junk stoger pumps absolute crap yup they look like a benneli that seems to be there selling feature
People want quality but are not willing to pay the price so buy what fits your budget and cross your fingers and hope for the best

Got a bps it’s such a beautiful gun with such nice wood it stays in the cabinet and my cheap Turkish shotgun has killed everything from doves to deer
