I know, nothing cheap about shooting these days but....

Looking for a cheap 30-30 load, a decent bullet and power recommendation. Maybe Hornady interlocks?

Mostly for plinking and shooting porcupines. I have ammo I would hunt big game with. My dad's winter fun is to snowmobile around the farm shooting porcupines, he smoked 16 last year lol.

  • 30-30 winchester brass, or whatever on hand,
  • large pistol magnum primers
  • .30 cal , 110 grs copper plated bullets
  • 10 grs Unique powder

cheap and very accurate

Budget Shooter Supply has Berry's flat nosed bullets for ~21 cents each I've used them before with the base level charge of IMR4064 (roughly 28gr). I'm sure someone will have a good recipe to use either cast or maybe even M1 Carbine weight rounds

Larger pistol magnum primers, interesting

I use only Large pistol primers now (large rifle primers are hard to find, the ones I have I'll keep for full power loads), but for reduced loads:
  • 308 Winchester
  • 30-30
  • 30-06
  • 303 British
  • 7.65 Argentine
  • 7.5 Swiss

Good on you. Most folks are afraid to try this great method of shooting minimum pressure, or slightly higher loads.

Definitely not recommended for higher pressure or max loads.

I recommend using slower and bulkier powders as well with these loads or if you only have faster powders, put a bit of Dacron over the powder column.

Myself I'd probably avoid pistol powders if possible as I don't reload for handguns and probably never will so if I can get powder that I can use for other rounds that's a bonus. Looking in the cabinet I have Varget, IMR 4350, Dominion D4895. I could go looking for IMR3031, 4064 as well.

Dacron is not required.
I can show you 25 shot groups at 50 meters making one 1.5 inch hole with my 303 british reloads, using 8 grs of Bullseye and 115 grs copper plated bullets.
The only danger is a double or even triple charge if you are drunk or stupid.

Here is an interesting article you might like to read:

Thanx for posting that.

I've read it before but just because it's in my nature, I choose to be more cautious and try to keep as much of the powder charge as possible against the primer.

I'm glad it works for you and others.

Berry's 150 FN, 7 to 9 grs Red Dot (do not exceed 9 grs, Lyman lists this as max under a 150gr cast bullet) and whatever primer, even LPP.
I also tried a mid range charge of H4895 but didn't find the accuracy as good as Red Dot. At 9 grs they chrony at about 1250fps and shoot around an inch at 50. I'm going to drop down around 5 grs and look for a subsonic load for them. A pound of powder goes a damn long ways like that.

I typically use a Lee dipper and switched to a roll crimp seater instead of the Lee FCD just to make them even faster to load. They're a ton of fun with very little recoil and great accuracy. I have no doubt they will work fantastic on small game too.

My next investment will be for a chronograph, maybe even that new Garmin.

At the moment I am just estimating the bullet speeds, it would be very interesting to get real data.

The 30-30 load with 110 grs bullets and 10 grains of unique should be a close 1600 fps, and you porcupines will not stand a chance.

The 308 WIN. load with the same bullet and 12 grs of Unique will clock 1800 fps, not too shabby at all.
