I have a 44-40 Uberti rifle on the way and need some brass. Been on the internet and got tired of searching. Anyone know of a company that has it in stock. And yes I put a WTB on the EE. Every place I look at is out of stock. I do have 14 rounds so I can at least try the rifle out when it arrives.
Rob.

So far over 3 hours of searching various stores across Canada and no cases. I did find a box of ammunition in NS. Road trip tomorrow. Not what you would call local. I have a couple stores in NS to call when they open tomorrow. I know one has loaded stuff two hours away.

Good luck.

This might as well be the entire thread, no brass or loaded ammo has been available in any regular quantities since early 2021. It's a scrounger's game for the time being if you want to shoot 44-40 and aren't already sitting on a decent stash - I've seen used brass sell north of $1/pc in the past few months.

Local chap bawt all that he could find when it came in.
He has way mawr’in ahh few hundred brass and factory loads.
He felt sorry for me and sold me a bag of Starline at feel sorry for me price.

A buck a brass isn’t hard to swallow when you consider what some are asking for primers.

Find the ammo/reloading chit, then find the ker-pow.

Coming up dry at stores. A few PM’s so waiting to hear back. I sat down and went through my case forming books and found a commonly available case I can make 44-40 from. 303 British can be used with the rim spun down, case shortened. Doesn’t say anything about thinning the neck but betting I will have to. I have 800 or 900 cases of 303 and tools to do it as a last resort. Another case that can be used is 44 Colt, try finding that one. 45 Colt also if the base is swagged down, slightly short.

Interesting.
Winter ith uppawn us.

Post some photos iff'in you decide to dew some 303B remawdifikayshuns.

I know where there is a small lathe dew'in naddah.

If you strike out entirely 38-40 can be expanded. It's not common either but that might mean there's some no one wants hiding in a forgotten corner.

I believe 45LC can be necked to 44-40 too but that's also thin on the ground these days.

get your order in with Rustywood. it may show out of stock but at least you will be on BO. starline makes runs of it once and a while and you may luck out that way. Mine was filled within a couple weeks when i ordered it, oct2022

Been searching for alternative cases. 38-40 and 44 Colt. No go on them either. I just measured bases on 44-40 and 45 Colt I have here. 45 Colt base is close enough I could use them. I have a few hundred. Good news is I found some used cases through my EE ad. 14 rounds I have just isn’t enough to have any amount of fun.

A friend of mine got some 44-40 from south of the border, not sure what company and can't get in touch with him right now. His got shipped up here no issues.

Switzers auction coming up has a little bit of this, but it is usually sold at silly prices with shipping and fees.
Local would be better.

Did you try Kelvin's Taxidermy and Gun Shop in Chester Basin? He often has some oddball stuff available. Anyone who stocks 22 WRF likely stocks 44-40.

Kelvin’s doesn’t have any. I have called or dropped into most shops in NS over the last few days. I even tried a few Canadian Tires with no luck. I have been offered new cases for $150/100 plus shipping but at that price I’ll make them out of another case. Stuff will show up, it just takes some time.

44-40 is one of the most elusive calubers around. I'm sitting on 300 rounds in commemorative boxes that I'm aching to fire in my Henry but I won't due to the rarity. I actually open the safe and ogle the ammo more than the rifle......and the rifle cost over $5k!!!

The shortage of 44/40 shells and components is the reason I chose to purchase a 76 carbine replica in 45/60.Cases can easily be made from 45/70 shells and for deer hunting it is a more potent round.
