Anyone else like red dots on long guns..?

Is anyone else more and more liking red dots on their long guns. I've suddenly noticed I've gotten rather a few.

It started with me looking for a way to put an optical sight on my 9.3x62 - an old hunting rifle that wasn't drilled and tapped so a scope wasn't an option but a good buddy of mine suggested a reflex dot on a custom cut dovetail mount to replace the front sight.

So, I tried it and liked it:

Next came the pump shotgun. Here in the UK we shoot pump actions and semi autos at turning targets with slugs. I tried my supernova with an iron sighted slug barrel but hated the sights (just grey on grey and lost them) so a bit of "googling" turned up the Burris Speed Bead and a Fast Fire III (3MOA)

And a big improvement in enjoyment and scores. Not the last time I’ll put a

Then there came the lever action.

Started off with a red dot, went to a scout scope then decided to go back to a red dot (mainly because of local range rules it isn’t so easy to shoot shotgun slugs but a 44 mag lever action is no problem). So, for the same sight picture as my slug guns, have gone back to another Burris:

(Must get a better picture)

Them came the idea of what to do with a rifle I had that I wanted to use for hunting but I had a 6-24x56 scope on with a very fine ret and I had an 8x56 fixed scope sitting around. This 8x56 is great for sitting in a dark wood but not great for quick target acquisition if you bump a deer on the way in or out. So, borrowing from the tactical and 3 gun crowd I put a red dot on the side of my 8x56 and took it hunting:

(That’s actually on my little Brno .22lr that I used to practice / work up with to see if I liked the concept). It went on the 7x64 Mausingfield after that.

Finally, there’s the other shotgun.

It’s a Fabarm H368 (Not sure they went to the US). Anyway, with a 26” multi choke and a 24” rifle sighted barrel for not a lot of money it was too good to pass up.

Think it looks cool “naked” using the man sights (fibre optics and really need to see when I can get it zeroed with those as well).

Anyway, given how much I liked my pump with a red dot, thought might as well stick a Burris on that. Given the receiver has ~11mm dovetail grooves, thought I might try and use those.

You can get a dovetail mount from people like Recknagel and Rusan in Europe that lets you mount red dots to dovetails quite easily but they have a little retaining pin in the underside:

So, there needed to be a small hole drilled in the receiver of the Fabarm:

After that, it became a simple matter of mounting the red dot on with the QD dovetail mount.

So, I like that system as don’t have to have a bulky rail in the way if I want to go from slug shooting to wing shooting and that appeals (The Benelli with the Speed Bead you have to unscrew stuff to take the red dot off, rather less neat).

Here's sort of the sight picture:

And the gun in it’s entirety (Stock actually fits me well so need a bit of lift to be aligned with the red dot)

So, apparently like I like red dots. A lot…. (Hello. My name is Scrumbag and I’m a red-dot-aholic…)

So, anyone else using red dots on their long guns more than they thought they would?

Close range, sure.

Oh yeah, not long range for sure.

9.3x62 - really a pigs / deer in thick woods rifle.
.44 mag lever action - not a long range tool (Hoot to shoot though)
12g slug guns - 50yds

(All of the above great at short, fast shooting).

On the side of the 8x56, helpful if you bump a deer at 50 yds.

That looks like a Rigby peep on the back of that bolt. I would be using that were it mine, as long as it was accurate.

As far as red dots go, I have an 870 with a Burris Fastfire & a 4 moa dot on it. Right now I have a 14" Dlask barrel on it, in the spring I'll swap that out for a turkey barrel. I find the dot to be a little indistinct, almost blurry or a starburst shape. I'm not sure if it's my eyes or my glasses, but I haven't decided yet whether I like them. Sure is fast though.

Yep, it is. I like that peep sight a lot:

However, it's a bit "all or nothing" for snap shots / running game whereas the red dot is very forgiving.

I find with red dots, they nearly always appear bigger than the manufacturer states (I have 3 brands Leica, Burris and Geco - which I'm sure is a Chinese rebrand). I think fast is good with red dots.

Scrummy

Anywhere one might use iron sights a red dot is an appropriate option. I have about 20 rifles/carbines mounted with red dots, they sure make hits simpler and faster than using irons, especially if your eyes are a bit older.

nope garbage on hunting rifles except for wannabe tac guys, not even close to scope or even good peep style sites...like it on my "tac" shotgun thoughLaugh2

tried it though? I put one on a howa ultralight this past year and kids dropped two deer back to back with em on same morning, I laid down prone and punched out fist size group at 300 on gong super quick holding bottom of dot on top of gong (200 zero) and then promptly went 2 for 3 at 400 with a 24-30" hold on a 10" gong...better try it before you deny it ;)

seeing a floating dot allowing view underneath the aimpoint is a whole different level of function than iron sights and even all the defensive pistol guys show advantages to speed and precision favour these things...so consider it a hybrid between iron sights and lpvo functionality, no way I could have shot that well at 300 and 400 with iron sights, once you can't see the target you can't see the target lol

IMG_3921.jpg

the 2 moa dot at that eye relief actually about 3.8 moa fyi, holosun 507c (407c would work also as I don't use the other 2 reticle options in the 507, just the 2 moa dot which is all the 407c offers), so actually quite a bit of functionality here, that dot filled up half of my 15" gong at 206 yards which means if the dot fits inside the kill zone just hit the switch, if its bigger than the kill zone you know you're past mpbr and need to think about your hold overs, which would be smart to have handy as it's surprisingly easy to connect with holdovers

pic won't upload but I made a decal with my 25 yard hold overs starting 275 to 400, then when at range and had gongs at 200/300/400 it was easy to see that 300 is a slam dunk and even 400 in ideal conditions if you get wind leaned into...also very doable

Its a no brainer. 2moa dot is plenty precise out to 300 if you know your hold. I've had fist size groups at 200 with my sks. Took my deer with my chiappa 12" and a holosun at last call this year. Never would have made the shot with open sights in that light. Going to put one on my rossi 45 colt when the rail comes in.

.....I find the dot to be a little indistinct, almost blurry or a starburst shape....

Sounds like astigmatism. Sometimes helps having sight closer to your eye. I also find my cheapo red dots are worse for me than a decent optic.

You can check it out easy, would that be a bad unit or your eyes..
Take the red dot and rotate around the view axis. If the shape rotates as well = not your eyes.
Second, grab some good quality polarizing glasses you have in your fishing box. Do you still see a weird shape = not you eyes.
Try to make a picture with your cellphone through the sight. Do you still see a weird shape? = not you eyes.

Couple years ago I had a Sig Romeo7 with that artifact. Complained to both the dealer and to Sig and got a full refund.
What was a problem (wife actually discovered it when I asked her advise, she is working in industry). The coating inside the lens is cheap and the laser diode project the dot but washes away as a line, and the coating amplifies.

I’ve tried it on a few rifles, liked it in more open areas for 150ish yards and in. In situations I found a 1x really tough for longer shots and had to pass on on coyotes more than once hung up in the tree line or in amongst . If I’m shooting an animal I want to be as precise as possible. They are faster and more intuitive than a peep I find, depending on the model and lens coating can also be equally bad in low light.
