Well the ship has probably already sailed on this one so it's probably more of an Alt-History What-if question in the spirit of "What if the germans had fielded the Me262 a year earlier"; but why hasn't anyone attempted to make a canadian-made variant of the Valmet M78? Would the RCMP just go "Nice try, AK variant"

Yup, AK variant. Valmet made Valmets. Valmets are named exceptions to the prohibition. If Valmet didn't make it, it is an AK variant.

Does Valmet manufacturing still exist, and what does it take to have them produce a new run of M78's and Hunters for Canada?
Even just the bare receivers.... Probably a pipe dream?:onCrack:

Would be a HUGE market for just receivers, or barrelled receivers

They are just product improved AK's. That design has been left behind by history and better technology. The only people who want AK's, only want them because the govt says they can't have them. That is not a good reason to want something.

Sure there would be a rash of people buying because they think they want an AK. Then quickly people would figure out just how crappy they are and the demand would dry up. Why pay big bucks for an AK, when a Type 81 would be WAY cheaper and is a better design?

I owned an AK back when they were non-restricted. There is NOTHING special about an AK and I don't miss it for a second. I even had a T81 for a bit and it also went on to another owner because there are much better options available to us.

A guy I know had an M78 that I really wanted and after many years I was able to buy it. Biggest disappointment ever and I very quickly sold it. Not very reliable in functioning, not very accurate, no easy way to attach an optic, no aftermarket parts to speak of....

Basically THIS.

The AK guys always blather on about the AK being reliable in dirty conditions and the AR15 being a dainty princess. Turns out the opposite is basically the truth. In-Range and Garand Thumb have done some admittedly extreme mud tests etc and the AR15 typically trounces the AK for reliability.

Valmet is currently owned by Sako, currently owned by Beretta.
Stoeger is also owned by them and owns everything for the Luger.

They could bring both back.. just saying

Likely cost prohibitive, but would be damn cool

T81s would seem like a better idea for domestic manufacture, especially since ti doesn't seem to be able to import them anymore. If someone competent could manufacture t81s for around 1500 msrp that would be it. Also t81 SRs in 762x54r like God intended

Merry Christmas gentlemen

AKs are great rifles. I would love to privately own one as would thousands of others. The technology also hasn't been left behind, its the main rifle on both sides in the biggest conflict going on in the world today.

I'd support this just to see how badly a Canadian manufacturer could #### up an otherwise reliable design and get people to pay for the privilege of beta testing it.

LOL, CDN gun owner who has likely never held a real AK, expounding on how awesome the AK is.

I've owned one, for years. They are nothing special.

The AK was designed for use by illiterate, cannon fodder serfs. If thats how you identify then I feel sorry for you. We westerners have much better choices available to us. The ONLY reason you want one is because your govt says you can't have one ... and thats a crappy reason to want something.
