Beautiful day!

Does anybody know any shops or dealers that have a Tikka T3X CTR 24" barrel in .308 in stock? (Looking for right handed)
Id like to support some local businesses or mom and pop shops if anyone has any idea or leads. Ive called around and it seems they are 6-12 months out, and 12-18+ months for the stainless version.
I dont yet have access to the EE but will check there when I get access as I am open to used, ive also tried ####### and put out "wanted" ads there.

(I also wasn't sure where to post this as im new to forums but picked the one that looks closest to what I was looking for.)

Many thanks in advance!

I believe but could be wrong for the most part the 24” barrel is special order and the times you listed are pretty normal for ordering a Tikka. I know the stainless option is pretty rare as well and likely special order for most places unless a shop decided to get one. (I know a shop that has a LH stainless and it’s about 800$ more than the regular CTR.)

Might be able to find used but you also might be better off looking for a varmint stainless.

What part of the country are you in ?

Does the varmint have the same semi-heavy barrel? I know the CTR and TAC A1 have the same barrel and action, but unsure about the varmint. This is going to only be a bench gun so the heavier the better, just looking for something with a thicker barrel that doesnt heat up as quick.

I am in Alberta, but if I found one in PEI id still make it happen.

The varmint is a slightly heavier barrel actually. I have both barrels kicking around. I also believe only the varmint and the tac a1 have 5 shot group MOA promise from factory but the CTR is only a 3 (could be wrong on this as I haven’t looked it up in ages.)

Both varmints I have owned would basically put 5 in a quarter at 100 yards with any ammo I seemed to feed it. My CTRs have also been good but the varmints are that little bit better in my experience.

The varmint doesnt have a threaded barrel either if that matters to you, however could always have a smith thread it and install a brake if you wish.

Yeah that was my only concern, but i believe the super varmint does, but at that price range i mine as well just get a varmint and get the barrel threaded.

I was aiming to make this a bench gun so the thicker barrel on the varmint makes sense. According to google, you can get around 3-5 shots with the CTR before it needs to cool down, and with the varmint you could squeeze in another 3-4, so for me, id just prefer that thicker barrel.

Ill checkout the varmint and UPR, or any other models that have a thicker barrel.
I am pretty set on tikka

Are you set on 24 inch barrel?
Going to 20 inch would only lose approximately 80 FPS

Here’s a test I did a few years back , using a savage 10 tr.View attachment 737045

The reason I was thinking of a 24 inch barrel was I was talking to a few PRS guys and they said with the .308 being a bit slower, to get the most out of it, go with the 24" barrel.
I will be using it at max 900m so they said if I had the option of a longer barrel, even a 30 inch, to go with it. According to my research in the last 20 minutes, I think the varmint is a better choice than the CTR, so i think ill be looking for a 1:8 twist rate with a 24 inch barrel.

Another option, is finding a cheaper used Tikka in any configuration. Take the barrel off, and have a gunsmith spin up a barrel for your exact specs. And place into a stock or chassis of your choice.

You'll end up with a better rifle in the end, built more to your specs/liking.

Just depends on what you want to do.

A 20" .308 will make it to 900m, no problem. If you just want to make hits, a 20" will do it.

If you want to win FTR matches and be as competitive as possible, then yeah, a 30" barrel will be much more optimal.

Im just getting into the sport so i dont need to go crazy with my first bolt action, so it seems a 20" would work for me. I wont be anywhere near the 900m yet, but my range maxes out there so i figured id like to get something that was capable and could work my way up to 900m.

Ill see what i can find locally here. I just found one posted today on #######

Many thanks for the help! I am on the hunt for one now. I believe the varmint comes in a 24" anyway, at least thats all ive seen. Then ill just have to find some scope rings for the scope I have, get it mounted, and go from there.
Have yourself a wonderful week and thanks again for the guidance. Cheers!

Funny enough, I checked ####### and some guy JUST posted it about 1hr before I searched. Its brand new, never shot (He bought it, a rail, a scope, and had some other financial obligations so wanted to sell it), comes with a leupold 20moa rail and im paying $300 less than MSRP with 2 boxes of ammo that I can try out. He lives in lethbridge, I was headed to YYC this weekend anyway so it worked out awesome. Now to just get my scope, some rings, get the barrel threaded and ill be good to go.

I appreciate the help, worked out awesome 👍

That’s how it happens if you keep eyes open. Get to help a fellow firearms enthusiast and get exactly what you wanted in the same process for a little better price.

Congratulations and can’t wait to see future posts in the forum.

Good luck with your new toy.... when you want to upgrade your Tikka barrel, pm or email. Anything is possible.

I suspect that once you get into the sport, you will move away from the 308Win as there are so many other options with less cost, recoil. But if you do decide the 308Win has your heart, there are precious few bullets you will want to use that need anything faster then a 10 twist.

FYI, been competing in FTR with the 308win for a long time... at long range. Built the rifles, shot the bullets.. plenty of real world data.

I’ve owned a CTR 6.5 PRC and a Tikka Varmint in 7 mm RM.

From what I remember, you’re correct that the varmint allowed for a few extra shots before getting too hot.
But it also takes twice as long to cool down.

That was my experience anyway.
