Hey everyone!
Just curious as to what everyone’s go to PA shotgun is? Looking to get my first shotgun and have been eying up an 870 fieldmaster. Any other suggestions?! I was going to get a 590 but was told Mossberg is a Walmart gun… thanks for reading my post!

Cheers,
DX

If the Mossberg 590A1 is good enough for the U.S. Military I'm thinking its durable enough for the average guy. 870 Wingmaster is a good choice too, Benelli Pumps have buttery smooth actions too.
Get the one that feels best when your shouldering it. There all good choices I prefer the safety location on the mossberg but thats minor.

I prefer mossberg, especially the action release location. Test a few out at your local gun store/range. As previously mentioned 590a1 was the only pump action to pass the mil-spec tests for US armed forces. The Remingtons work well with pistol grips due to the safety location (cross bolt instead of tang). No real world experience with Benelli pumps, but the 14 inch super nova I handled seemed nice enough.

Both the 870 and 590 will do you well, the 870 has the upper hand on aftermarket accessories and factory barrel options, stocks etc. Whatever you get make sure you get a barrel that’s threaded for choke’s already.

Don’t worry too much about the brand, as long as it’s not some pos budget Turkish shotgun. Shotguns typically breed, so you likely will buy more than one, you’ll figure out quick what you like or don’t like.

I didn’t know that 590a1 was mil-spec, Cool!!! So I mean definitely not “Walmart”. Just like most companies they have lower and higher quality im assuming. I seen that mossbergs o/u are made in turkey… are all?

I’m definitely a fan of the tang safety over the cross bolt. Any word on the quality of the newer 870’s coming out of Remington post-bankruptcy?

That’s exactly why I was leaning towards the 870. Never been one to keep things stock hahaha.

Well, the 870 has the tang safety you are so fond of...
Have not handled a "New" 870 just a quick peek from the front counter.
They look pretty from 8 foot away, but there is something about the trigger guard that has me curious.
Have three shotguns, do not or shall I say my self restraint and taking another one home is a tough urge to curb.

I have a 590A1 Retrograde and love it. G4C has one in stock too it looks like.

If it comes down to the 590A1 or the 870 - look at the controls and figure out which you prefer. To me that was the most noticeable, functional difference. I do still want to track down an 870 Police model from the 80's with that awful metal top-folding stock/pistol grip (think: Terminator 2) . Pretty much because it looks cool and the 870 is a great gun too. I'd probably want a backup stock for when I get sick of looking cool and want to return to function over fanciness...

590a1 does look pretty bad ass! I was leaning towards the 870 for bird hunting… but looking like terminator while out for birds is kind of appealing too! Lol

I have a early 90's Wingmaster that has been completely bulletproof in all sorts of rain/sleet/snow/swamp conditions. That being said, if I knew for certain I was going to be dropping it in the mud, I would pull my Mossberg 500 out of the safe. I believe both would handle it without issue, just the 500 isn't as pretty to start with so I wouldn't feel as bad scratching it

Rem 870

I'm firmly in the Remington 870 camp. Older models preferred.
