So is it necessary to completely strip a 10/22 and clean it every couple hundred shots? I mean remove the trigger group and bolt? Kinda new to these semi auto 22's. Got my first 10/22 takedown. A good shooter. Been using bolt guns, pumps and levers all my life!!!

No

If you use a dry lube like Hornady one shot , you should be good for a couple thousand rounds. If you use to much oil to lubricate you will have to clean more often. Ive had 1022s I have only cleaned after 5000 rounds or more.

Not sure if it’s still available in Canada, only place I found it was a bass pro. I had a smaller gun shop look it up on their computer and he wasn’t able to order it anymore. Maybe it’s tied into propellants in certain products going the way of the dodo.

I’ve been searching for it from mid covid on.

Depends on the ammo... if running match ammo with oily lube, you can swab out the action every couple of hundred rds. A mud will form so it looks bad but easy to clean, at least to get more rds downrange. Q tips for an easy clean.

it really matters to keep the chamber and throat clean. The rest of the bore is not as important but a chamber can foul up enough to cause function issues. If you are just running a sporter chamber, it will be more tolerant of fouling vs a match/tighter chamber.

I would take it apart every 500rds and do a more detailed clean... but I am looking for 100% reliability in competition.

I've had a 10/22 that I wasn't sure which decade it had last been cleaned in. You could have started agriculture inside that receiver! But it was still shooting right up to the time I took a notion to look inside.

Once broken in they can run almost dry, very little lube needed to run well. Bx10 magazines and a radiused bolt make for a very reliable little plinker.

My 10 22 purchased in the 80s has never been cleaned outside of wiping down everything you can see while assembled and running a rag through the barrel. Last time I had it out last fall it continues to shoot accurately and dependably with no mis fires FTEs FTLs or any of those other alphabet acronyms.

My 1022 is 30 years old, I clean it every 1 to 6 years. It goes bang clean or dirty every time. If it was my comp gun I might clean it a bit more.

Clean it when it starts to jam. And the less you clean it - the less it will jam (it's oil and clp and other crap in the action that attracts dirt and carbon and makes them gum up). I like to clean mine once a year before I put it away or the winter, but I bet I could go years without cleaning it at all.

Cleaning means many different things to most shooters. The guy that has a gun for 30 years and never cleans it is probably shooting less than 50 rounds a year. For many a malfunction is just a hiccup and nothing to worry about. Someone who competes may lose a shoot because of a malfunction. Serious shooters will often fire hundreds of rounds to get data and practice positions. The cleaning required will be based on the individual firearm and the amount it’s being shot.
